Field Operations Manager

Sacramento, California, United States Sacramento River Cats Full time

Sutter Health Park isn't just a ballpark — it's the stage where unforgettable moments unfold. From River Cats and Athletics baseball to concerts, graduations, and community celebrations, every event begins with a world-class playing surface that sets the tone.

At the center of it all is the Manager, Field Operations — the leader who keeps the field game-ready and spectacular, day in and day out. Working closely with the VP of Field Operations, this role ensures the turf, infield, and overall playing surface meet MLB standards while supporting every event that calls Sutter Health Park home.

What You'll Do:

  • Oversee the daily care, maintenance, and repair of the playing field, including turf management (mowing, fertilizing, aerating, over-seeding, and pest control) and soil management (infield skin, pitcher's mound, home plate, baselines, bullpens, warning track).
  • Manage irrigation systems, equipment operation, and preventative maintenance, ensuring everything is safe, reliable, and in top working condition.
  • Take the lead on game preparation, tarp pulls, and event setup, balancing both short- and long-term field management plans and budgets.
  • Support non-baseball events on the field, such as concerts, high school games, graduations, partner field days, and winter activities.
  • Track and maintain inventory of department supplies, including fertilizers, pesticides, conditioners, and equipment.
  • Jump in with flexibility for other duties as assigned that keep the field and facility at its best.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, mentor, and train part-time game-day staff to deliver exceptional results during River Cats games and other events.
  • Partner with the VP of Field Operations on staffing needs, including interviewing and hiring.
  • Review and approve schedules and timesheets while ensuring accountability, teamwork, and compliance with policies.
  • Lead with professionalism, providing coaching and corrective action when needed to maintain high standards.

What We're Looking For:

  • A degree in Turfgrass Management (two-year minimum) or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • At least one year of experience maintaining a professional baseball field to MLB standards.
  • A valid driver's license with a clear driving record.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-first mindset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel; ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to learning and applying new field management techniques.
  • Pesticide training (or ability to complete within 30 days of hire).

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

  • Must be comfortable with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, and pulling.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds repetitively and work with turf equipment and machinery.
  • Work is primarily outdoors in all weather conditions — from summer heat to rain and wind.
  • During the season, expect to work all 75 home games plus additional events, averaging 8–10 hours per day.

Compensation:

The expected annual base salary for this role is $68,640-$71,000 plus discretionary bonus. Final offers for this role will be made within the parameters of the salary range provided. Years of experience, skills, and other factors are considered when determining the salary offered. Total compensation & offer package will include the following:

  • Relocation bonus available for candidates relocating from outside the Northern California region
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits for employees and dependents
  • Employer 401K match
  • Paid time off plans
  • Sacramento River Cats and Athletics home tickets, team store discounts, and more
