The Elizabeth River Trail is a 10.5-mile urban pedestrian and biking trail that winds along the Norfolk waterfront in Virginia, maintained and promoted by The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation in collaboration with the City of Norfolk. The Foundation is dedicated to enhancing and expanding the trail as a recreational, social, and educational asset for the community. With the mission of connecting the trail from Naval Station Norfolk, to the Virginia Beach Trail, the Foundation, plans, programs, and advocates for the ERT as part of a regional trail system. We focus on environmental stewardship, fostering neighborhood connectivity, and supporting innovative economic development in Norfolk, VA. The trail offers residents and visitors a unique opportunity to engage with the city's natural beauty and vibrant neighborhoods.
Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role based in Norfolk, VA, with a hybrid work schedule. The Assistant Director will support the Foundation's mission The Assistant Director ensures the smooth day-to-day operations of The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation. They will perform a full range of logistical, analytical, and administrative coordination for the Foundation Board, Executive Director and Committees. Duties include support of capital projects, fundraising, Foundation marketing and storytelling, analysis of trail usage, surveys, trends, web and social media traffic, grants data, and other metrics, as well as the coordination and management of seasonal interns and volunteer recruitment. The Assistant Director will also collaborate closely with the Executive Director to drive awareness and engagement with the Elizabeth River Trail.
Qualifications
-A love for the Elizabeth River Trail and its mission.
High level of ethics, empathy, and dependability.
Ability to independently represent the Foundation at speaking engagements.
Proven track record of relationship building, collaboration and teamwork.
Self-directed and autonomous work ethic with the ability to shift priorities quickly.
The ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people, and to manage stress with humor.
Project and budget management experience.
Bachelor's/Associate's degree OR 5+ years experience working in an office or nonprofit setting
Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Google Drive, Google Forms and CRM databases.
Excellent organization, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
High level of oral and written communication skills including active listening and empathetic communication.
Ability to work fl exible hours including evenings and weekends to meet the needs of community events.
Feeling comfortable in the outdoors.
Ability to traverse the trail on foot or by bike, work in outdoor weather conditions, and frequently lift/move 20-lb boxes and set up tables/tents for events.
Social media experience.
Desired Qualifications:
-Working knowledge of local/regional/national trail systems.
-Experience coordinating volunteers and volunteer-led projects/committees.
-Graphic design and photography skills.
-Grant research and metrics reporting experience.
-Experience executing outdoor special events.
