Job Description

Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as the Director of Clinical Perioperative and Procedural Operations.

This position is responsible for the development and direction of all clinical and support operations for one of the pillars of Perioperative and Procedural Services (Inpatient ORs, Ambulatory/Pediatric ORs, Procedural Units).  Reporting to the Executive Director of Clinical Perioperative and Procedural Services, the successful candidate will be a strategic partner for the administrative and financial direction for the pillar. The position provides leadership using LEAN process redesign and improvement, work flow and logistics analysis, revenue enhancement, cost reduction and control, capital budgeting, and operations budgeting.  

Who you are:

A collaborative leader who can work effectively with cross functional team to meet goals and provide excellent care with:

  • BSN required. Masters preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of clinical experience with 5 years of hospital management experience required. Academic medical center experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of expense reduction strategies, financial performance measurement, forecasting and budgeting required.
  • Knowledge of Operating Room billing procedures preferred.
  • Sterile processing and logistics knowledge highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of capital acquisition process and skilled in decision making for strategic investments & ROI analysis required.
  • Knowledge of purchasing and supply distribution procedures preferred.

What you'll do as Director of Clinical Perioperative and Procedural Operations: 

  • Develop and maintain a sound department management structure, operating policies and procedures, and staffing to meet the operational needs of the department.
  • Provide direction to administrators and other departmental leadership.
  • Develop, implement and monitor improvements to internal departmental operations including supply utilization, labor utilization, patient flow, and ancillary department support.
  • Assure compliance with regulatory bodies.
  • Identify benchmarked operating standards where efficiencies can be obtained, studies, and implements such operational changes.
  • Influence external departments to implement work flow changes that result in service improvements and cost reductions.
  • Develop, interpret and achieve departmental goals through active participation in committee work and task force assignments as needed.
  • Identify issues, presents strategies, and acts as a change agent.
  • Plan for capital acquisition and facility planning, participates in economic payback and supports operational efficacy evaluation.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor budget within established guidelines.
  • Establish and monitor labor productivity indicators and metrics.
  • Plan for long and short-term provision of human talent and supplies and equipment to meet the needs of the patient care and administrative activities.
  • Insure accuracy of financial and other program data.
  • Collaborate with medical staff to determine appropriateness of equipment and supplies.
  • Demonstrate cost-conscious decision-making in collaboration with medical staff on selection, use and control of equipment and supplies.
  • Audit staffing patterns based on financial constraints, workload needs, qualifications of staff and other resources available to ensure quality patient care.
  • Assure that staff are scheduled in accordance with workload needs and union contracts. Recruits, interview, selects, and retains staff. 
  • Evaluate staff performance on a formal and informal basis and implements corrective action process as needed.
  • Create a work climate that encourages positive staff morale, motivation, and commitment.
  • Apply interpersonal communication skills to maintain an open network of communication among staff members, other health care professionals and hospital departments.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled staff meetings which provide opportunities for discussion of staff and departmental concerns.
  • Establish systems that assure open communication with patients, families and members of the health care team concerning the individual patient's plan of care which includes patient teaching and discharge planning.
  • Participate in planning and evaluation of educational programs to meet department needs and promotes the development of staff at all levels.
  • Manage by planning, setting priorities, and re-deploying staff as appropriate.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement activities if requested; arranges for staff participation as needed.

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
