Mechanical Engineer II

Performs advanced, specialized professional field and office planning and technical work in an engineering specialty; performs design, construction, maintenance, installation, or communications design duties; may act as the team lead for a small group of engineers.
Required
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering field.
- Four (4) years of experience in mechanical engineering.
- Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
- Knowledge of theory, practices, materials, and equipment of the engineering field to which assigned.
- Knowledge of engineering design, maintenance, and inspection techniques.
- Skill in writing reports, specifications, and contract documents.
- Ability to perform advanced engineering tasks within the field of specialization.
- Ability to supervise professional journey-level and paraprofessional engineers.
- Ability to formulate life-cycle projections.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Experience in designing HVAC systems for commercial buildings
- Familiarity with CAD and building modeling tools, as well as HVAC load calculation software
- Basic understanding of mechanical and plumbing codes, including ASHRAE standards
- Leads and provides senior-level planning, engineering, coordination, implementation, and management support for projects requiring (insert specialty) engineering solutions within the office or section to which assigned.
- Performs design, construction, maintenance, installation, or communications design duties.
- Develops system concepts, designs, specifications, scheduling, and cost estimates.
- Assists with project planning and the preparation of related budgets.
- Interacts with consulting engineers, contractors, vendors, and Fairfax County Public Schools staff; inspects work during installation, modification, and maintenance stages.
- Performs advanced engineering tasks within the specialty.
- Coordinates the development, implementation, and maintenance of training programs in the area of specialty.
- May serve as lead over one or more journey-level professionals or perform advanced engineering tasks with program management responsibilities equivalent to lead responsibilities.
- Writes reports; and attends meetings and conferences, as required or assigned.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. This position may also visit worksites in the field and be exposed to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises.
