Position Description:

The laboratory of Dr. Shiva Mandala in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is seeking a full-time Post-Baccalaureate Research Intern. Our research lies at the intersection of biochemistry, structural biology, and biophysics. The intern will support lab operations and perform experiments under general and direct supervision. This position offers the opportunity to develop proficiency with advanced techniques in the structural and functional analysis of ion channel complexes involved in cellular signaling.

This position is designed for individuals who:

  • Seek training, experience, and mentoring in a research setting

  • Plan to pursue a graduate or professional degree in science, medicine, or a related field

  • Have US citizenship or permanent residency

Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related fields

Required Qualifications:

Basic knowledge of the following:

    • General cell culture and sterile techniques

  • Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, and gel electrophoresis

  • Protein expression and purification

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Interest in inventory management, equipment maintenance, and supply ordering.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in a molecular biology, cell biology, or biochemistry laboratory is strongly valued.

Working proficiency with the following:

- - General cell culture and sterile techniques

  • Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, and gel electrophoresis

  • Protein expression and purification
