Medical Office Job Description
Position SummaryThe Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides direct patient care and clinical support in a medical office setting under the supervision of a physician or Registered Nurse. This role requires strong clinical skills, professionalism, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced outpatient environment while delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide direct patient care including vital signs, patient intake, and clinical assessments within LVN scope of practice
- Administer medications and injections as ordered by the provider and in accordance with state regulations
- Perform clinical procedures such as EKGs, venipuncture, specimen collection, wound care, and dressing changes
- Assist providers with examinations, treatments, and minor procedures
- Prepare exam rooms, maintain supplies, and ensure infection control standards are met
- Accurately document patient information, treatments, and procedures in the electronic medical record (EMR)
- Provide patient education regarding medications, treatment plans, and follow-up instructions
- Coordinate care with providers, front office staff, labs, pharmacies, and external facilities
- Respond to patient phone calls, messages, and prescription refill requests as directed
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and office policies
- Support quality improvement initiatives and office workflow efficiency
Clinical Competencies
- Patient assessment and vital sign measurement
- Medication administration and documentation
- Intravenous (IV) therapy skills including initiation, monitoring, maintenance, and discontinuation of IV lines (within state LVN scope of practice)
- Venipuncture and IV access for blood draws and infusion therapy as permitted
- Recognition and response to IV-related complications (infiltration, phlebitis, infection)
- Infection control and sterile technique
- Specimen handling and lab coordination
- Knowledge of common outpatient procedures and treatments
- Electronic Medical Records (EMR/EHR) proficiency
- Accurate clinical documentation and chart management
- Appointment flow support and patient throughput awareness
- Understanding of medical terminology and office protocols
- Compassionate, patient-focused care
- Clear and professional communication with patients and staff

- Current Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license in good standing (state-specific)
- Graduate of an accredited LVN program
- Minimum of 1 year experience in a medical office or outpatient setting preferred
- Proficiency with EMR systems preferred
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the office for extended periods
- Ability to lift and assist patients as needed
- Manual dexterity for clinical procedures and computer use
- Medical office or outpatient clinic

- May involve exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases

- Monday–Friday, with occasional extended hours as needed
