Job Description:

The Specimen Processing Laboratory Assistant under the direction of the Laboratory Director and supervised by the Phlebotomy Supervisor works to ensure efficient and accurate workflow of patient specimens within the central lab and off site locations. Responsible for handling blood and other lab specimens on a daily basis to ensure that all applicable policies and procedures are followed and patient privacy of protected health information is maintained. The Laboratory Assistant is aware of formal department clinical protocols, policies, work flow and standards of practice, and they are sensitive to the interrelationship that makes up the patient provider encounter and work closely with Phlebotomists, Laboratory Technologists, Medical Providers, and other administrative support staff.

The Specimen Processing Laboratory Assistant will assume specific routine LIS functions in support of daily operations and informs Laboratory Director of any potential system issues along with recommending system improvements when necessary.

Essential Job Functions

· Verifies test requisitions by comparing information on specimen with LIS tests ordered,

· Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations

· Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the provider, office manager or laboratory technologist; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders

· Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations

· Serves and protects Prima-CARE, P.C. by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements

· Maintains a clean and efficient workspace and is aware of all emergency procedures

· Follows assigned work schedule in an effort to be dependable to fellow staff and department coverage needs

· Communicate promptly and efficiently with supervisor regarding patient specimens and /or orders that could arise

· Communicates time off requests to supervisor in writing and seeks guidance from supervisor with problematic situations

· Assists supervisor with reporting poor work performance and questionable skills when observed

· Wears proper protective clothing (i.e. lab coat, gloves) at all times

· Adheres to applicable department policies and procedures

· Reports all Biohazard exposure s to Supervisor, immediately, completing necessary incident reports including source patient information

· Performs duties in compliance with established safety and OSHA guidelines

· Adheres to established HIPAA confidentiality and Patient Privacy standards

· Complies with applicable legal requirements, standards, and procedures including, but not limited to, those within the Compliance Process and Code of Conduct

· Reports concerns and suspected incidences of non-compliance

· Perform other duties as needed

Pay: $ $18.00 per hour
