A DAY IN THE LIFE
Enthalpy Analytical, is part of the larger organization, Montrose Environmental Group, is comprised of over 9 laboratories servicing air, water, soil, and toxicology testing. Regulations drive the need for our services, but our unique capabilities allow us to add value to clients beyond environmental compliance.
Our Richmond, VA lab is currently seeking a Full-Time Group Leader in our Semi-Volatile department (Environmental Laboratory).
As a key member of the laboratory team, Group Leaders equip and maintain a well-trained and informed staff to meet the expectations of our clients by efficiently and profitably generating defensible date on time. Our Group Leaders will be an analyst who are responsible for most aspects of an operating team within the lab. Additional duties are:
- Personnel supervision, time management, and operational efficiency
- Production oriented and knowledge of Gas Chromatography is an asset
- Foster staff development through coaching, conflict resolution and team building
- Ensure accurate and timely communication with internal and external clients
- Coordinate and maintain project scheduling to meet turnaround and quality targets
- Analyze samples as required using validated or published methods
- Support method development and validation activities to expand or optimize testing capabilities
- Prepare data summaries for inclusion in client reports.
- Perform sample and standard preparation as needed
- Participate in instrument calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions for analytical or operational issues
- Write and assist the Quality Assurance Coordinator (QAC) in updating or revising standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels of consumables, reagents, and spare parts for routine analyses
- Keep detailed and organized records of sample preparation, analytical results, and instrument maintenance
- Communicate effectively with client's technical questions, data interpretation, or concerns
- Identify, document, and assist in the resolution of non-conformance events
- Participate in continuous improvement (CI) and overhead projects designed to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and quality
- Ensure full compliance with Enthalpy's Quality Assurance Program, operational policies, and Health and Safety Plan
- Support weekend or split-shift coverage as required
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Director
YOUR EXPERTISE & SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, individuals must be able to perform each duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Bachelor degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum of 3-4 years of commercial analytical or production laboratory
- Group Leaders maintain proficiency across key analytical methods within their department and ensure method accuracy, consistency, and compliance with quality standards
- Demonstrated ability to organize, communicate, and prioritize effectively to ensure smooth workflow and alignment of departmental objectives
- Capable of handling non-routine samples and managing an effective workflow within the department, including oversight of man-hours, logistics, and scheduling across multiple assays
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Demonstrated communication skills resulting in positive team and operational outcomes
- Familiarity with analytical instrumentation such as GC, IC, TOC, TOX, and related methods
- Conflict resolution: Ability to identify and remove organizational or communication barriers to improve collaboration
- Skilled in diagnosing issues, implementing corrective actions, and fostering accountability
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and composure in high-pressure situations
