We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Accounts Payable Clerk to join our clients fast-paced team in Edison, NJ. This role is 100% onsite, Monday through Friday, and begins as a temporary assignment with strong potential to convert into a permanent position based on performance. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, proactive, and comfortable handling both transactional work and problem resolution across departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Initiate outbound calls to delinquent customers to collect payments and resolve outstanding balances, with consistent follow-up until settled
  • Accurately apply cash receipts including ACH, wire transfers, lockbox deposits, and credit card transactions
  • Research, analyze, and resolve chargebacks from investigation through final dispute and repayment
  • Process internal credit memos and ensure accurate documentation
  • Set up new customer accounts, determine creditworthiness, establish terms, and maintain the Customer Master file
  • Collaborate with the sales team and internal departments to resolve past due issues and account discrepancies
  • Utilize vendor portals and manage relationships with large national accounts (e.g., Amazon, Macy's, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond) – experience highly preferred
  • Serve as backup to the Credit/Collections Manager when needed
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the department manager

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance preferred, or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 3 years of credit/collections or accounts receivable/accounts payable experience
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including Pivot Tables and VLOOKUPs), Word, and Outlook
  • Experience with AS400 and accounting systems such as Varial or JD Edwards is a plus
  • Knowledge of standard credit and collection procedures and AR reporting
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills and a professional demeanor with customers while remaining assertive and confident
