Assistant Librarian

General Purpose
The successful candidate for this position will provide library services to all ages. Duties include reference work, circulating materials, and other special projects.

Functions And Duties

• Provides reference and reader's advisory services to library patrons.
• Creates and maintains displays to highlight book collections or services.
• Performs circulation tasks using library software, such as checking in materials, collecting fines, preparing library cards, and other duties as necessary.
• Assists patrons with the use of library technology, such as printing and using self-check machines.
• Provides excellent customer service.
• Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Education-

• High school degree or equivalent required
• A four-year degree from an accredited college or university in the social sciences, humanities, or a related field preferred.

Experience-

• Some professional training in library work, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience, OR current work on a Master's Degree in Library and Information Sciences.

Skills/Abilities-

• Some knowledge of books preferred.
• Some knowledge of the principles and practices of public library function.
• Some knowledge of reference tools and procedures.
• Considerable knowledge of patron needs and the ability to provide what is needed.
• Strong oral and written communication ability.
• Some ability to develop and present public information materials to promote library use.
• Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, and the general public.
• Some Spanish language skills preferred.
• Some knowledge of basic office software and general technology required.

Working Conditions

• Working conditions may vary.
• No significantly hazardous conditions exist.
• Work is typically performed in an air-conditioned office.
• Must be able to bend and stoop and reach high places.
• Must be able to stand and move for long periods of time.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
• Must be able to work with all ages.
• Must be able to work in a noisy environment.
