Superintendent Port Operations

POSITION OVERVIEW: Chiquita is seeking a candidate highly adaptable to changes in the business environment, flexible to working schedules and eager to take accountability for different processes at our facility in Oxnard, California. This is an exempt position responsible for port, yard and warehouse operations which includes, but is not limited to, processes planning and execution supervision to ensure operational standards, safety, order and cleanliness, cost effectiveness and data integrity. This position has a broad spectrum of responsibilities. The candidate will be given a specific area of supervision and will be exposed to cross training with other areas to be prepared when needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Warehouse Supervisor
• Direct supervision of 6 people (2 warehouse coordinators and 4 warehouse loaders -forklift drivers)
• Training and certification of forklift drivers in compliance with OSHA standards
• Training of warehouse coordinators on process and systems to ensure inventory integrity
• Responsible for daily forklift check list, their preventive and corrective maintenance as well as supervising the weekly watering of the forklift batteries
• Follow up on preventive maintenance schedule of truck restrainers and dock levelers and address corrective maintenance needed on these warehouse equipment
• Assign resources as needed to cover the operations of the two warehouses
• Continuous process improvements to ensure waiting time of drivers no longer than 2 hours after check in time with a fast turnaround of fruit on the staging area, coolers, and partial containers
• Support on fruit and equipment physical inventory as required
• Ensure a safe operation environment as well as order and cleanliness of the warehouse and CFS
• Implement and guarantee compliance of the Container Freight Station procedures
• Coordinate CBP inspections as needed
• Liaise with management and HR on documented incidents as well as disciplinary warnings, when necessary
• Liaise Management and HR on documented disciplinary warnings, when necessary, to direct reports.
Vessel Operation Supervisor
• Direct supervision and training of 4 people (4 gate clerks)
• Ensure inventory systems integrity by timely and accurately dispatching and receiving the fruit orders, liner import, liner export and empty containers in the system(s).
• Ensure processes integrity, being the most relevant ones without excluding other business needs: intermodal equipment inspection and any damage reporting as a result of the inspection, temperature validation of liner reefer containers in-gating at Oxnard, correct use of cards to facilitate the identification of the container content in the yard.
• Provide the necessary tools and equipment needed for gate personnel to perform their duties
• Ensure a safe operation environment as well as order and cleanliness of the gate and cold dock
• Planning of vessel operations (discharge, load back and drayage) balancing customer priority needs with bays to allow an effective cycling of chassis to timely dispatch containers for the load back, minimizing stevedore labor stand-by time and storage at the port
• Prepare and distribute the vessel operations reports for discharge and load and complete the corresponding transactions in the system, including the arrival to CBP
• Transition liner appointments to MCS appointment system for cold dock transloads and all import and exports
• Support on fruit and equipment physical inventory as required
• Guarantee the execution of customer's SOP on the transloads at the cold dock
• Coordinate with M&R to execute pre-trip of containers required for export cargo
• Coordinate with GWF and Transportation teams on liner export delivery to the yard in compliance with cut off for vessel operation
• Coordinate with Yard Supervisor to have liner import equipment and documentation ready to dispatch to customers
• Provide the necessary reports to validate stevedore's and port's invoices and the reports to bill liner customers on transload, storage and demurrage at Oxnard yard
• Liaise with management and HR on documented incidents as well as disciplinary warnings, when necessary.
Yard Supervisor
• Direct supervision and training of 10 people (4-yard clerks, 3-yard truck and 3 heavy equipment operators)
• Training and certification of yard truck drivers and heavy equipment operators in compliance with OSHA standards
• Training of yard clerks on systems to ensure accurate equipment location within the yard
• Ensure a safe operation environment as well as order and cleanliness of the equipment and yard
• Guarantee cold chain integrity of refrigerated cargo (fruit and liner) within the premises: ensure refrigerated containers in Oxnard yard are plugged within a reasonable time between moves, monitoring of the temperature and reporting exceptions (equipment malfunctions, power outages, power outlet damages)
• Assign the tasks to yard trucks and reach stackers maintaining a flow and equipment segregation per defined yard layout allowing an efficient truck turn time to support vessel operations and over the road dispatches.
• Timely update the physical location and content of all containers in the yard inventory system.
• Responsible for daily check lists of yard equipment (reach stackers, yard trucks and golf carts) and their preventive and corrective maintenance
• Ensure electrical outlets are fully operational, as well as extension cords and Y splitters
• Provide the necessary tools and equipment needed for gate personnel to perform their duties
• Support on fruit and equipment physical inventory as required
• Liaise with management and HR on documented incidents as well as disciplinary warnings, when necessary
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Associates degree required (or relevant experience)
• 3 years of port and/or yard operations
• 2 years in a leadership role
• Experience in intermodal environment preferred
• Proficient in Excel and Outlook
• Ability to quickly learn computer information system applications
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

• Excellent written/spoken communication skills
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
• The Port Operations Superintendent position will require both, office work (in a controlled environment) as well as field work exposed to an environment with heavy equipment traffic
• The incumbent will be exposed to heavy equipment traffic flow and 480V plugs
• Sometimes the incumbent may sit for long periods of time at a desk or computer terminal
• Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment in the course of normal workday
• Walking, stooping, bending, twisting, lifting, pulling, pushing and reaching may be required in completion of job duties
• This is a supervisory, exempt position that requires availability to extended working schedules, as well as weekend and holiday work. Schedule can be subject to changes based on business need.
