Maintenance Worker

Description

The City of Cypress has several openings for Part-Time Maintenance Worker. This is a temporary, non-benefited position limited to 20 hours per week (1,000 hours per fiscal year).

Incumbents would perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work in one or more of the assigned maintenance areas: facilities, parks, streets, sewers, storm drains and pumping operations. Receives direct supervision from a Maintenance Supervisor and lead supervision from a Maintenance Specialist.

Example of Duties

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the routine repair of structures including carpentry, plumbing and electrical repair, painting buildings, facilities and equipment.
  • Assist in the installation of sprinkler systems, clean and provide limited servicing to equipment and drainage system pumps.
  • Sweep, mop, strip wax and polish floors, vacuum, dust and polish woodwork, fixtures and equipment, wash windows, walls and lavatories, empty and clean wastebaskets and trash containers.
  • Set-up, move and take down tables, chairs, and other furniture and equipment.
  • Repair playground equipment and park facilities.
  • Clean, maintain and repair park facilities and structures including athletic fields, play equipment and park buildings.
  • Drag and prepare athletic fields.
  • Clean and maintain sewers, drainage ditches and drainage pumping stations, walkways, roadside, gutters, curbs and other facilities.
  • Prepare surfaces and assist in application of paint, gravel, asphalt, sealers, concrete and premix materials to streets.
  • Maintain sewer cleaning schedule, pump lift stations and storm drain pump stations.
  • Remove pumps and motors.
  • Perform routine electrical repair and calibration of gauges.
  • Program pump station computer controls.
  • Repair, remove, and replace concrete.
  • Repair, install and replace traffic and other signs.
  • Layout and paint traffic lanes, bike lanes, curbs, legends and crosswalks.
  • Install and repair raised pavement markers, guard rails and signs.
  • Load and unload supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Operate light/heavy equipment.
  • Make field investigations of citizen complaints and requests.
  • Perform heavy and light manual labor using a variety of common tools and equipment requiring less than journey level skill.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repair on assigned equipment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, and safe work practices, including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment of public works repair and maintenance including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment and confined space hazards.
  • The use and operation of appropriate power-driven and motorized equipment and hand tool use.
  • Common tools and materials used in public works maintenance and general construction.
  • Modern construction, repair techniques and maintenance procedures.
  • Safe driving practices and State and local laws pertaining to the operation of assigned vehicles on streets and roads. Types of vehicles include but are not limited to, Sewer Jetter/Cleaning /Truck, Asphalt Patch Truck, Asphalt Roller, Motograder, Caterpillar, Street Sweeper, Water Truck, Boom Truck, Chipper Truck, Dump Truck, Backhoe Tractor and Front Loader Tractor.

Ability to:

  • Operate light motorized equipment and appropriate use of hand tools.
  • Understand, interpret, and carry out both oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Maintain and establish cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
  • Perform heavy and light manual labor, safely lift, carry, or relocate objects and materials weighing 80 pounds.
  • Follow and adhere to all safety rules and regulations.

Experience & Training:

  • Experience working in construction, facility repair and maintenance, athletic field and park facilities maintenance, or street maintenance.
  • A high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning experience is highly desirable.
Supplemental Information

Due to the performance of field duties, an incumbent in this position will require possession and maintenance of a valid California driver license.
