Church Custodian (Sexton)

Saint John's is a progressive, vibrant and family-oriented congregation with an average Sunday attendance of 95 parishioners and we are seeking a part-time Custodian (Sexton). The Sexton is responsible for making sure the church is maintained and clean, setting up Sunday Coffee Hour fellowship, and special events. The position requires strong maintenance skills.

The individual in this role must demonstrate a commitment to supporting the mission and values of Saint John's while taking pride in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming facility. The Sexton should be skilled at prioritizing and managing multiple tasks simultaneously, working effectively under deadline pressure, and performing duties with minimal supervision from the head pastor.

Essential Functions

  • Hours: 4 hours / Sunday and special events
  • Ensure all parts of the church and parish hall are tidy and clean, including restrooms
  • Open buildings for worship on Sunday mornings
  • Set up for Coffee Hour Fellowship; wash dishes (commercial dishwasher); breakdown tables and chairs; mop floors
  • Be present for special events
  • At least one year of related janitorial or custodial experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and climb stairs and ladders as needed
  • Ability to set up and move tables and chairs, set up for events, and to use cleaning and maintenance materials and equipment safely
  • Communicate with the Parish Administrator regarding any issues that arise that might need to be brought to the attention of the Property Committee
  • Communicate with the Parish Administrator to order cleaning supplies or fellowship supplies
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team and independently; and under pressure
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Variable schedule includes needs during Christmas and Easter, as well as special events
  • Be flexible in availability to accommodate the schedule of church activities
  • Criminal background clearances required
  • Compensation is $21-$24 / hour, paid biweekly
