Distribution Design Engineer I

Although this position is remote to start, candidates who are local to the New Jersey area are required. Travel to customer sites in the NJ area is required. Candidates must also be willing to do a hybrid work setup in the future. Northern NJ candidates are ideal.

Our cleint is seeking Associate Distribution Engineers for electric utility design engineering in the Northern New Jersey area (for future hybrid setup). We're looking for someone dedicated to ensuring that every project, no matter how simple or complex, meets exceptional quality standards. You'll work directly with clients to maintain a strong reputation for high-quality work.

In this role, you will gain experience in a variety of areas, including NESC, Structural Pole Modeling, Electrical Power Calculations, GIS design training, Project and Financial Management, and Client Design Standards.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will develop work packages for OH, UG, URD, Make Ready, and Street Light projects using customer GIS and WMS systems such as GE Smallworld, Bentley Expert Designer, and Maximo. Candidates should be comfortable in both a field and office setting, as some fieldwork may be required. Training in customer engineering and construction standards will be provided.

Associate Distribution Engineers will gain experience in:

  • Coordination of conflicting utilities and other field engineering design requirements
  • Developing design packages for complex cable/conduit projects in dense urban environments
  • Work permit development, easements, and ROW applications
  • Designing mainline vault medium voltage switchgear, network system design, and distribution system protection and coordination
Additional Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of a technical lead, Associate Distribution Engineers will:

  • Develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems operating from 4kV through 138kV
  • Ensure compliance with safety, design, and quality standards
  • Travel to sites for inspections and return to the office for engineering design work
  • Perform engineering calculations, including structural analysis for wood pole loading, guying calculations, conductor sag and tension specifications, and voltage drop calculations
  • Develop permitting documents for different AHJs
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including post-construction reviews
  • Conduct root cause analysis of outages and implement mitigation strategies
Background Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial preferred) from an ABET-accredited institution
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to use a personal vehicle for customer-related travel (Job-related travel will be reimbursed at IRS-approved rates)
  • Willingness to perform both field and office work, including outdoor environments when necessary
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
  • Experience with distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, SOCKET, Spida-Calc, or similar
  • Experience using CAD tools, MicroStation, and/or GIS
  • Knowledge of NESC and design standards
