Electric Meter Tech II

General Description:

The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform difficult technical work in the installation, inspection, repair and maintenance of residential and commercial single phase, polyphase, self-contained, and transformer rated meters and equipment. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in vocational training or related field. Minimum of 5 years of progressive electric metering and generator experience. The equivalent work experience and education may be considered.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and current DOT Medical Card required.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical metering, electrical substation, and distribution equipment
• Knowledge of principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation, testing, removal and maintenance of transformers, regulators, capacitors, switching and fusing equipment, circuit breakers, controls and instrumentation, relays, batteries and chargers, revenue meters and other associated equipment.
• Ability to effectively plan, organize and direct the activities of a crew; schedule, oversee, monitor, and participate in assigned work.
• Ability to operate electrical test equipment and tools; interpret schematic drawings and computerized data; operate computer equipment; interpret electrical codes and regulations.
• Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
• Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
  Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.

Essential Job Functions:

• Plans, supervises and participates in electric meter installation, calibration, programming, and testing of all types and classes of electric meters and related equipment.
• Troubleshoots difficult metering problems and billing issues.
• Monitors and operates AMI network.
• Programs solid-state electric demand meters for different billing rates.
• Coordinates projects with co-workers, other City departments, contractors, and consulting engineers in order to achieve the overall City goal.
• Supervises and participates in the installation, maintenance, and operation of stand-by and load management generators.
• Participates in switching orders for transferring electrical loads, isolating electrical circuits & substations.
• Orders budgeted equipment and prepares requests for future budget items in order to maintain the integrity of City generators.
• Operates and controls system distribution automation equipment.
• Pulls after-hours rotational call on substations, generators, traffic signals, and electric locates.
• Responds to system outages and assists in restoration of electric services as needed.
• Performs all other duties as may be required to meet organizational needs.
