ENGINEERING INSPECTOR

POSITION OBJECTIVES

This is an administrative and technical position that conducts field inspections of Engineering projects including construction of city infrastructure. Responsibilities also include ensuring compliance with all City specifications and safety standards. Oversees compliance with project contract requirements relating to scope, budget, and completion dates. Maintains records and prepares reports on a broad range of projects as assigned. Duties and assignments may vary and overlap depending on the operational needs of the Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct inspections of maintenance programs, public infrastructure, and engineering capital projects.
  • Initiate and process contract and purchase change orders in consistency with City policy.
  • Document capital and maintenance activities, communicate and resolve issues with contractors, and enforce contract performance requirements.
  • Gather infrastructure inventory and condition assessment data. Enter data into the Asset Management System.
  • Provide planning, scheduling, and estimating of work for maintenance activities.
  • Assist in preparing contract and bid documents, write simple technical reports, and review and interpret engineering plans.
  • Attend and participate in pre-construction and project management meetings and work with engineers, contractors, developers and others.
    Performs related work as required.

This position is part of the City's Emergency Management Team and, as such, shall be expected to perform all duties that are assigned during an emergency management operation. Any additional compensation, above the normal weekly salary, shall be outlined by the City Manager in the City's Emergency Management Activation and Emergency Declaration. Failure to appear to perform emergency management assignments and to work assigned shifts as scheduled by the City's Emergency Management Personnel or individuals designated by the City Manager to assign such functions will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Associates degree in engineering, technical, or related field required.
  • Three (3) years of responsible and continuous experience in inspection and managing maintenance programs and capital engineering projects; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid FL license

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to use computer and various software programs as needed
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions
  • Skill in researching, compiling and presenting technical information and reports
  • Skilled in customer service and conflict resolution
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
