Senior Grants Associate

Background: The Environmental Protection Network (EPN) is a 501c3 non-profit organization with over a $5 million annual budget. EPN has a small staff across the country, a number of contractors, and more than 700 EPA alumni volunteers focused on building and defending the capacity of environmental agencies and the communities they serve to address the most urgent health and environmental crises. EPN works to:
- Ensure that EPA advances policies, budgets, and institutional changes to address climate and environmental injustices, as well as other pressing public health needs
- Provide pro bono capacity-building technical assistance and training to frontline communities, NGOs, and under-resourced state/local/tribal government agencies
- Provide pro bono support to civil servants
- Educate Congress and serve as a critical resource for facts, objective analysis, and scientific rigor for reporters and other strategic partners
Work will be predominantly remote, as EPN does not have an office. There will be some in-person meetings in locations in the United States.
About The Position:
Reporting to the Director of Development, Kathy Pope, the Senior Grants Associate will play a critical role in supporting EPN's fundraising efforts by managing, writing, and coordinating grant and contract proposals and reports. This position is ideal for a highly organized, detail-oriented writer who can manage multiple deadlines and work collaboratively across teams in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
The Senior Grants Associate will also work closely with the Executive Director, other senior staff, and the Board of Directors to support EPN's institutional fundraising strategy, ensure compliance with grant requirements, and advance special development projects as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grant/Contract Development & Writing (All in coordination with and/or per the direction of the Director of Development)
- Research, review, and write compelling grant and contract proposals, letters of inquiry, and renewal applications aligned with EPN's mission and priorities
- Collaborate with national policy, technical assistance, civil service resilience, and public affairs staff to gather information and develop strong narratives
- Work with the fractional CFO, Operations, and the Executive Director to develop detailed budgets, and budget justifications, aligned with funder guidelines
- Track grant opportunities and deadlines
- Collaborate with partners such as Lawyers for Good Government and the DOE Alumni Association on regrants and joint applications
- Create and/or edit slides for funder briefings
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned to support EPN's development goals.
Grant/Contract Compliance & Reporting (All in coordination with and/or per the direction of the Director of Development)
- Prepare interim and final grant reports and contract invoices in compliance with funder requirements
- Prepare outlines and briefing documents and schedule prep time for verbal reports
- Monitor grant deliverables, timelines, and reporting obligations to ensure compliance
- Maintain organized records of submissions, awards, and reporting schedules
Special Projects & Development Support (All in coordination with and/or per the direction of the Director of Development)
- Support special projects, including funder research, proposal strategy, and internal process improvements
- Assist with strengthening internal grant systems, templates, and documentation as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated success writing grant proposals and reports for foundations and/or government funders
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills with keen attention to detail
- Experience coordinating multiple deadlines and managing grant calendars
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Familiarity with nonprofit budgeting concepts and grant compliance requirements
- Experience developing, reviewing, and managing grant budgets in collaboration with finance and program staff
- Interest in environmental justice, public health, climate policy, or related fields
- Proficiency with Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Canva, and virtual collaboration tools

- Planning- The Senior Grants Associate develops clear, effective plans to manage grant/contract pipelines, proposal schedules, and reporting deadlines. They proactively anticipate upcoming needs, coordinate with internal stakeholders, and structure their workflows to support timely, high-quality submissions
- Managing Execution- The Senior Grants Associate ensures strong execution by managing grant/contract deliverables from start to finish, from proposal development through reporting and compliance. They track progress, adapt to changing priorities, and follow through on details to ensure successful outcomes while supporting broader development goals
PAY:
- An annual salary of $76,341 in Washington, D.C. We will adjust the salary up or down based on the locality.

11 paid Federal Holidays and other paid days when the office is closed, including:
The work day before or after July 4.
- The day before and after Thanksgiving.
The week of December 25th and the week of Jan 1st (FY26-Dec 21st-Jan 1st, FY27-Dec 20th-Dec 31st)
Organization-wide non-meeting days on all major holidays that fall outside of the federal calendar (our staff can submit these to our calendar based on religious or cultural holidays)
- 3 weeks (120 hours) of paid time off (inclusive of sick, personal days, and vacation)
- 5 days of annual disaster relief time off in the event of a natural disaster impacting you or your family (does not carry over or pay out upon exit)
- 5 days of annual bereavement (does not carry over or pay out upon exit)
- 3 annual "EPN" days to be used for any purpose across the year (does not carry over or pay out upon exit).
