Opto-Mechanical Engineer

At Endress+Hauser, progress happens by working together. As the global leader in measurement instrumentation, our ~17,000 employees shape the future in the field of process automation. Whether developing and realizing new technology as a team, collaborating to build instrumentation, or strengthening vital relationships with countless global industries, we work to create trusted relationships that help everyone thrive. As a family-owned company, we look beyond short-term moves and work to create a vision that is forward-thinking for our people, our clients, and the world at large.

We are looking for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join Endress+Hauser Optical Analysis, the global leader in Raman spectroscopy, tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), and quenched fluorescence (QF) instrumentation for laboratory, process, and manufacturing environments. Our laser-based analyzer systems perform high-performance chemical composition and concentration measurement of all phases of matter in any installation environment.

What is the role about?

We are seeking an Opto-Mechanical Engineer with a strong foundation in mechanical design and practical experience in precision instrumentation. This is a hands-on engineering role involving mechanical and opto-mechanical design, prototype build, testing, and system integration. You'll work as part of our opto-mechanical engineering team to design and refine mechanical assemblies that incorporate optical components, assist with optical alignment and integration, and evaluate prototypes through lab testing and practical validation. Your core strength should be mechanical engineering, with familiarity in optical systems, lasers, or photonics considered valuable. You should have several years of industry experience and be comfortable collaborating with other engineering disciplines, as well as partners in manufacturing, quality, and service, to bring complete systems together. Working knowledge of electronics and instrumentation integration is a plus

Which tasks will you perform?

  • Design and Development :
    • Design opto-mechanical parts and assemblies for TDLAS gas analyzers and sample conditioning systems.
  • Develop manufacturable designs that balance performance, cost, and assembly complexity.
  • Contribute to the mechanical design of subsystems with attention to alignment, thermal stability, and ease of integration.
  • Select materials and processes suited to harsh industrial environments, including stainless steel and aluminum alloys.
  • Perform mechanical stack-up and tolerance analysis to verify performance under worst-case conditions.
  • Use simulation tools (thermal, structural, optical) to inform design decisions.
  • Build, assemble, and test prototypes to evaluate form, fit, function, and integration.
  • Support system-level integration of optical, mechanical, and electronic components, including commercial parts.
  • Technical Drawings and Documentation
    • Generate and maintain accurate fabrication and assembly drawings, BoMs, inspection documents, and work instructions.
  • Apply GD&T to support both design intent and manufacturing inspection.
  • Contribute to engineering documentation activities, including change orders and release packages.
  • Project Collaboration and Support
    • Work closely with optical, electrical, and mechanical engineers to develop and refine complete systems.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and industrialization teams to transition designs into production.
  • Participate in FMEA, design reviews, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential failure modes early in development.
  • Troubleshoot issues in current and legacy products, particularly around mechanical performance, optical alignment, and thermal behavior.
  • Provide input on manufacturability, serviceability, and cost during all phases of development.
  • Participate in hands-on testing, build support, and continuous improvement activities in the lab and production areas.

The duties above describe the general nature and level of work being performed in this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties; additional responsibilities may be assigned, as required, by management.

What do we expect from you?

• 3–7 years of experience in mechanical or opto-mechanical design for precision instrumentation or related systems.Expert-level proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks preferred); able to take design from concept to detailed drawing.

• Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks preferred), capable of developing designs from concept through detailed drawing release

• Hands-on experience building, assembling, and testing prototypes and systems

• Strong understanding of machining, sheet metal, and 3D printing processes

• Solid grasp of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis

• Familiar with structural and thermal simulation tools (SolidWorks Simulation, Ansys); exposure to optical modeling tools (Zemax OpticStudio) is a plus

• Comfortable participating in FMEA, design reviews, and structured problem-solving to improve design robustness and reliability.

• Effective at documenting and communicating design intent clearly and consistently

• Able to work independently while collaborating effectively in cross-functional teams

• Experience with optical systems, lasers, or photonics is a plus

• Working knowledge of electronics or instrumentation integration is desirable

• Experience with ERP/PLM systems (Syteline, SAP) and PDM tools (SolidWorks PDM) preferred.

• Familiarity with hazardous area equipment design and certification is a plus

• Experience using CMMs or other metrology tools to verify precision components is a plus

What can you expect from us?
