About the Position
The Security Supervisor assists in the development and implementation of all security policies, procedures, and programs to meet business needs while ensuring the safety of all Museum properties, employees, and visitors. This position works closely with the Executive Director and Director of Museum Operations to oversee general safety, fire protection, accident prevention, and security investigations. The Security Supervisor provides direct supervision to both Museum Security Officers and contract security staff to ensure an efficient and cost-effective operation.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Supervision and Staffing
- Supervise Museum Security Officers and oversee contract security staff.
- Coordinate staffing for regular hours, vacations, and absences.
- Monitor officer performance, conduct annual evaluations, and manage disciplinary actions.
- Maintain personnel files, including documentation of performance, attendance, and commendations.
- Create and maintain officer operational schedules.
- Complete daily activity reports in the absence of the Payroll Manager.
- Interview and select new security personnel.
Operations and Oversight
- Conduct rounds to ensure all security operations are properly executed.
- Observe both contract and Museum Security Officers to ensure continuity of services.
- Address officer concerns and distribute information both verbally and in writing.
- Keep the Director informed of issues related to contract security services.
- Patrol galleries and the Museum perimeter to verify proper officer coverage.
- Attend city and partner meetings regarding external events and coordination.
Incident Response and Investigations
- Review incident reports, ensure proper documentation, and conduct follow-up investigations.
- Conduct internal investigations in response to losses or other incidents.
- Maintain readiness to serve on-call during non-business hours.
- Ensure preparedness for personal protective services when required.
Training and Development
- Develop and administer comprehensive Security Officer training programs.
- Provide orientation and basic training for new personnel.
- Conduct ongoing field training and maintain accurate training records.
- Design and deliver on-post and in-service training sessions.
- Prepare and distribute educational materials to enhance professionalism.
- Review and update emergency evacuation plans; provide evacuation training.
Program Administration
- Implement proactive and responsive security programs.
- Review and update Department of Protection Services (DPS) policies and procedures.
- Provide security training for non-security staff, including emergency response and evacuation.
- Ensure timely corrective actions for reported security incidents.
- Support the Director of Museum Operations with internal and external client needs.
- Manage security support systems, including ID badges, lock/key control, and electronic access.
- Oversee removal documentation for Museum property.
- Maintain professional liaison with law enforcement and security organizations.
- Administer computerized scheduling and timekeeping systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree preferred.
- 2–5 years of experience in the security industry required.
- Previous staff management experience required.
- Experience in cultural property protection is a plus.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong decision-making and judgment skills.
- Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and high-pressure situations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication; strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills.
- Computer literacy required (Microsoft Office applications).
- Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities.
- Proven conflict-resolution skills.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to see, hear, speak, and write clearly to communicate effectively.
- Physically able to stand or sit for more than two-thirds of a shift.
- Capable of walking for extended periods during a shift.
- Able to climb ladders and stairs up to one-third of a shift.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, and kneel as needed.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs (night shift) and 50 lbs (day shift).
- Must exert up to 100 lbs of force occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, and 20 lbs constantly.
- Exposure to environmental conditions such as uneven surfaces, temperature extremes, humidity, noise, dust, and fumes.
- May patrol in both indoor and outdoor conditions.
