Who We're Looking For:
C2 Group is seeking a motivated and reliable Field Project Engineer for field survey and data capture to join our San Diego office. This role sits between survey, civil engineering, and data processing. You will be responsible for collecting accurate field data using a FARO terrestrial scanner and traditional survey methods, then processing that data in the office to support our engineering team. You will split your time between fieldwork on project sites and office work, preparing clean, usable basemaps and surfaces for design. This is an in-person position based in San Diego and includes regular travel to field locations throughout Southern California.
You enjoy both being out in the field for data collection and doing focused office work to process that data. You have a strong analytical foundation, close attention to detail, and a genuine drive for continuous professional development. You understand that careful setup, control, and field data collection are critical for accurate and efficient processing in the office. You are comfortable working with LiDAR point clouds, survey data, and AutoCAD to bring field-collected data together into clear, usable outputs for the engineering designers.
Key Responsibilities
Field Work
- Perform field data collection using a FARO terrestrial laser scanner and traditional survey equipment.
- Establish and document survey control points and targets for terrestrial and aerial LiDAR and survey work
- Plan scan positions and survey setups to capture required features, structures, and terrain
- Record field notes, photos, and sketches that explain site conditions
- Follow site safety procedures and utility client requirements while working near live infrastructure
- Coordinate with project managers and engineers on site access, scheduling, and data capture requirements
Office and Data Processing
- Process scan data using Autodesk ReCap and related tools
- Clean and organize point clouds, remove noise, and prepare usable datasets for engineers
- Integrate point clouds with traditional survey data and existing records
- Build surfaces, linework, and basemaps in AutoCAD Civil 3D that match project needs
- Prepare deliverables such as CAD base files, point cloud exports, and simple layouts for engineers
- Maintain organized file structures, naming conventions, and version control for all data and drawings
Required Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Surveying, Geomatics, or related field. Equivalent work experience in survey or field engineering may be considered.
- One to five years of experience in survey field work, LiDAR scanning, or civil design support
- Experience using Autodesk ReCap and AutoCAD or AutoCAD Civil 3D for point cloud and drawing work
- Ability to read and interpret plans, profiles, and standard details
- Valid drivers license and ability to travel to field sites within California
- Ability to work in person in our San Diego office and in the field on a full-time schedule.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior work collecting field LiDAR scans and integrating them with survey control
- Experience preparing surfaces, breaklines, and basemaps in Civil 3D from point clouds and survey data
- Familiarity with GIS or LiDAR datasets and their use in design
- Experience working under the direction of a licensed surveyor or engineer
Why Join C2 Group?
- Competitive salary and benefits, including medical, dental, and retirement plans.
- Hands-on, industry-leading training with our team of experts.
- Professional growth opportunities in a fast-paced, evolving industry.
- Innovative and collaborative company culture.
