French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts is a premier co-ed sleepaway summer camp for children aged 7 to 17, located in Hancock, New York in the scenic Catskill Mountains. With campers from all 50 states and over 40 countries, we offer world-class programs in music, theater, dance, art, circus, magic, horseback riding, and more. Alongside performing arts activities, we provide the full range of traditional summer camp experiences. Younger campers receive focused guidance and supervision, while older campers participate in unique programs such as community service, legacy projects, and college-prep courses. The camp spans over 1,000 acres of fields, woods, and private lakes, providing a vibrant environment for creativity and growth.
Role Description
This is a summer position, with full-time potential, on-site role for a Head Counselor located in Hancock, New York. The Head Counselor will oversee the day-to-day operations and supervision of campers and counselors, ensuring a safe, engaging, and enriching camp experience for all participants. Responsibilities include managing staff performance, resolving camper issues, coordinating schedules, facilitating communication between staff and directors, and maintaining adherence to camp policies and safety protocols. The role requires strong leadership, conflict resolution, and organizational skills to create a positive and supportive environment.
Qualifications
- Leadership and interpersonal skills to manage teams, resolve conflicts, and foster a collaborative environment.
- Organizational and time-management skills for overseeing schedules, logistics, and operational tasks.
- Experience in child supervision, mentoring, or youth program management.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact with staff, campers, and families effectively.
- Problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Experience in a camp setting, education, or related roles is preferred.
- Relevant certifications in first aid, CPR, or other safety qualifications are a plus.
- A sincere passion for working with children and a commitment to creating an inclusive, welcoming environment.
