The Center for People is a dynamic non-profit organization that provides innovative services and programs to the low-income community in Lincoln, Nebraska, addressing basic needs and providing opportunities to achieve economic independence for our clients.

We are currently looking for a Custodial Specialist. This position is a full-time, 40 hour per week, onsite position.

I. GENERAL FUNCTIONS

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of the organization's facilities to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for staff, clients, and visitors. The Custodian performs routine cleaning duties, minor maintenance, and assists with event setup as needed. This role requires attention to detail, reliability, and adherence to safety and health regulations.

II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs routine cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting throughout the facility.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, break rooms, and other common areas.
  • Empties trash receptacles and ensures proper waste disposal.
  • Replenishes and tracks inventory on supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
  • Assists with setting up and breaking down tables, chairs, and other equipment for events and meetings.
  • Reports maintenance and repair needs through MaintainX.
  • Maintains outdoor areas, including sweeping walkways and ensuring entryways remain clean and accessible.
  • Follows proper procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous materials.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Responds to urgent cleaning or maintenance requests as needed.
  • Serves as the backup driver for food pick-ups and other events as needed.
  • Assists with Pantry set-up and tear-down.
  • Monitors building entrances and public spaces to ensure cleanliness, organization, and safety for learners, shoppers, and visitors.
  • Assists Facilities and Operations teams with light maintenance such as changing light bulbs, tightening fixtures, and reporting safety hazards.
  • Prepares classrooms and training areas by ensuring floors, tables, and equipment are clean and ready for instruction.
  • Supports warehouse operations by organizing cleaning equipment, maintaining supply closets, and assisting with recycling or cardboard baling.
  • Assists with snow and ice removal from sidewalks, entryways, and emergency exits during winter months.
  • Supports on-site event logistics by assisting with set-up, tear-down, and ensuring restrooms and public areas remain clean throughout events.
  • Maintains janitorial equipment by cleaning, inspecting, and reporting when repairs or replacements are needed.
  • Participates in safety drills and inspections to help ensure compliance with OSHA and internal safety standards.
  • Assists with pest control monitoring and reporting in coordination with maintenance vendors.
  • Performs routine walk-throughs to identify safety issues such as spills, trip hazards, or blocked exits and corrects or reports them promptly.
  • Supports Wellness and Education areas by cleaning refrigerators, microwaves, and common-use areas regularly.
  • Provides seasonal cleaning projects such as deep cleaning carpets, washing windows, or waxing floors.

III. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and use cleaning chemicals safely.
  • Attention to detail to maintain a clean and organized environment.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic understanding of safety and health regulations related to custodial work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff and visitors.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing tasks and priorities.

IV. DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred. Knowledge of basic maintenance tasks is a plus

V. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of custodial or related experience.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
