Powerhouse Arts is seeking a Lighting Supervisor / Technical Project Manager to join our versatile team. The Event Production department supports all live programming (including performances, exhibitions, and development/cultivation events) and rental activities. The Lighting Supervisor / Technical Project Manager will be responsible for maintaining PHA's Theatrical and Architectural Lighting Systems, supporting upcoming venue capital projects, and providing technical management and logistics support for assigned programs, exhibits, and rental events. This role will report to the Director of Event Production and Operations and will work in a self-directed, goal-oriented manner. The Event Production Team at Powerhouse Arts consists of a F/T Director of Events Production and Operations, an AV Supervisor, P/T hourly project-based Event Venue Supervisors, and P/T hourly Lighting and AV Technicians.
Responsibilities
Event Planning / Installation / Execution / De-installation
- Conduct pre-production planning on assigned programs and exhibitions
- Serve as the point of contact for all logistical planning with organizers
- Work with producers/organizers to ensure all production elements meet the show's needs and timelines
- Participate in site visits and meetings with internal staff, external partners, and venue rental clients to prepare for upcoming events
- Following site visits and meetings, input relevant event-related information on designated shared platforms
- Prepare paperwork and equipment for upcoming events and programs
- Regularly oversee load-in, installation, de-installation, and load-out calls
Venue / Technical Infrastructure / Equipment
- Keep Theatrical and Architectural Lighting Systems in excellent working conditions and perform system updates whenever advisable
- Help identify optimal processes and workflows to utilize PHA's event spaces
- Formalize and introduce time and quality-optimized processes and workflows to utilize and restore the Grand Hall House Plot
- Devise suitable inventory tracking and changeover / restore documentation, and regularly produce support paperwork for all programs
- Provide instruction on safe, effective, and professional usage of lighting equipment and infrastructure to P/T technicians, as well as client and artist technical representatives, as needed
- Perform maintenance and repairs on PHA equipment and infrastructure
- Keep all equipment storage spaces in impeccable order and constantly improve storage solutions and comprehensive labeling
- Collaborate with the Director of Event Production and Operations to identify further lighting-related build-out needs and manage the project and implementation of lighting-related improvement projects
- Keep up to date on the newest products and developments in all areas of Entertainment Technology relevant to operations at PHA, and in particular, track the latest developments within the manufacturers' brands native to PHA
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Maintain a safe & professional work environment according to Health & Safety, DOB, FDNY, and
- OSHA codes at all times without exception
- Enforce compliance with Building Rules at all times
- Maintain an overview of overall building logistics and ensure the successful co-existence of shop and event usage of the loading area and the freight elevator
- Encourage and enforce careful handling of all equipment (rented and owned)
- Reliably record and communicate any incidents or accidents
- Become a holder of a current mobile work platforms certification. (PHA arranges training as needed).
- Become a holder of the FDNY E-06, formerly known as E-27/E-30/- Smoke/Haze Operator/SPFX
- Safety Certificate of Fitness. Prior certification would be helpful but not required. PHA will support staff in obtaining this certification.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 8 years of active work experience in professional entertainment venues, as well as prior experience in a supervisory position in the entertainment technology field
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and safety-conscious
- Specialty skills in the following areas are required: Proficiency with current professional lighting equipment, moving lights, lighting consoles (specifically ETC), networked systems, Vectorworks, andother widely used theatrical drafting platforms, as well as Lightwright
- Working knowledge of temporary and permanent venue rigging is required; advanced rigging experience, along with labor and project management skills, is preferred but not mandatory
- Experience with moving light repair and maintenance, and related certifications; willingness to obtain certification.
- Completion of, or willingness to complete, the ETC Foundation 1 learning plan
- Experience in fine arts handling, installation, and lighting is a plus
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Understanding of financial management and budgeting of repair, maintenance, and improvement projects
- Hands-on approach on a day-to-day basis, and especially in unforeseen situations
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed required(Comp. time granted)
Compensation & Benefits:
Salary range is $78,000-$90,000 and commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, an employer-sponsored retirement plan, generous paid vacation, and a Citi Bike
membership. New employees receive 20 days of PTO at an accrual rate of 1.67 days per month, 11 paid holidays, and a paid holiday closure on days between Christmas and New Year's.
