Firefighter - Mechanic

Basic Function
Under the direction of the Senior Firefighter Mechanic, perform specialized and skilled work involving the repair and maintenance of a variety of fire department equipment and vehicles; perform firefighting and rescue duties in emergency situations.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a journey level firefighter with specialized mechanical skills to perform basic maintenance and repair of fire equipment. It is distinguished from Senior Firefighter Mechanic in that the latter classification is a fully qualified mechanic and firefighter and may train and supervise other firefighters in mechanical duties.

Education And Experience
Two years experience in the repair, overhaul and maintenance of gas and diesel vehicles and equipment.

Licenses And Other Requirements
Valid California driver's license. Incumbents must obtain a California Class B driver's license within five months and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate issued by an EMS authorized agency and/or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician certification within one year of employment

A valid driver's license may be required at the time of appointment and employees may also be required to drive their own vehicle and provide proof of liability insurance as per Vehicle Code VC

This position may require pre-employment drug test, physical examination, and fingerprinting for a background investigation.
