The primary responsibility is providing supervision, professional and administrative leadership and guidance to the Inpatient Section of Pharmacy Service at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System (VHACIHS). The position reports to the Associate Chief - Operations, Pharmacy Service.

DutiesVA Careers - Pharmacy:
Functions: (In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed below the incumbent must also be able to perform all staff pharmacist duties.)
A. The incumbent is responsible for administrative/supervisory functions:
1. Has direct line supervisory responsibility for Inpatient Clinical Pharmacists and the CLC pharmacist; has indirect supervisory responsibility for the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, Inpatient Technicians, IV Room Specialized Technicians, and Student Interns.
2. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Inpatient Pharmacy.
3. Responsible for the development, revision and implementation of policies and procedures for this section.
4. Responsible for all performance improvement activities in the Inpatient Pharmacy including audits and accuracy screening.
5. Maintains effective relations with medical, professional, and administrative staff of our institution.
6. Responsible for providing professional guidance to medical and professional staff.
7. Responsible for enforcement of VHACIHS and Pharmacy service policies.
8. Completes performance evaluations in a timely manner. Recommends awards and/or disciplinary actions as appropriate.
9. Oversees day-to-day maintenance and operation of Pharmacy equipment/automation and utilizes available reporting functions to optimize efficiency in collaboration with the Pharmacy Automation Technician/ADPAC.
10.Works with the Pharmacy Leadership team to promote optimal patient care within budget appropriation.
11.Responsible for assignment of work of the staff.
12.Responsible for an accurate daily record of time and attendance.
13.Responsible for completing all assignments on time. If for any reason, any assignment requires an extension, that extension will be requested prior to the due date.
14.Assures medications dispensed and services provided are consistent with accreditation standards and applicable laws impacting VHACIHS and Pharmacy service.
15.Monitors and maintains appropriate data and prepares reports and correspondences in a complete, accurate, and timely manner.
16.Participates in interdisciplinary medical center committees as a member representing Pharmacy service. The incumbent serves on quality assurance and administrative investigations when appointed.
B. The incumbent is responsible for the following activities in Program Management:
1. Functions as a Program Supervisor to the Inpatient Pharmacy section (acute care, CLC, and inpatient Domiciliary) regarding planning, directing, controlling, and coordinating comprehensive distributive Pharmacy services.
2. Maintains good workflow patterns to keep drug distribution in accordance with the requirements of Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) for both unit-dose and IV admixture programs while ensuring accurate dispensing and record keeping.
3. Effectively organizes workload, directs inpatient activities, plans short- and long-range objectives/goals, solves problems, and achieves established goals within budget and staffing constraints.
4. Incorporates performance improvement (PI) activities into all areas of the Inpatient Pharmacy section. Develops quality assurance (QA) criteria, monitors and evaluates quality of care provided by the Inpatient Pharmacy section, and reports results to appropriate Pharmacy Leadership and staff.
5. Works with other Pharmacy Leadership, pharmaco-economist, and pharmacy procurement to provide cost effective care.
6. Works with other pharmacy leadership and staff to identify areas of duplication of efforts and develops solutions to streamline processes, reduce waste, save costs and improve patient care.
C. The incumbent is responsible for the following clinical functions:
1. Verifying provider orders to be complete and appropriate for dose, route and frequency.
2. Screening orders for incompatibilities, patient allergies and drug interactions.
3. Provides basic consultative information concerning drug therapy to providers, nurses, and health care professionals.
4. Clarifies and resolves all problems identified which relate to patient drug therapy. Refers all matters requiring further administrative action to the Associate Chief - Operations or Chief of Pharmacy.
5. Monitors patients for medical and pharmaceutical problems and documents information.
6. Actively participates in Performance Improvement (PI) Activities.
7. Collaborates with the Associate Chief - Clinical, Pharmacy Service for pharmacist scopes of practice and related competencies in the Inpatient Pharmacy section.

QualificationsAll requirement must be met by the close date of this announcement, 11/17/2025
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Education: Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. NOTE: Prior to 2005 ACPE accredited both baccalaureate and Doctor of Pharmacy terminal degree program. Today the sole degree is Doctor of Pharmacy.
- Graduates of foreign pharmacy degree programs meet the educational requirement if the graduate is able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT).
- Licensure: Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure.
- English Language Proficiency: Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations:
GS-13 Pharmacy Supervisor
Experience: In addition to the GS-12 requirements, must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-12. The GS-12 requirements include: Knowledge of professional pharmacy practice; Ability to communicate orally and in writing to both patients and health care staff; Knowledge of laws, regulations, and accreditation standards related to the distribution and control of scheduled and non-scheduled drugs and pharmacy security; Skill in monitoring and assessing the outcome of drug therapies, including physical assessment and interpretation of laboratory and other diagnostic parameters.
AND
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Pharmacists assigned to this position must demonstrate the following KSAs:
a. Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff.
b. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions.
c. Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy.
d. Skill in managing people or programs.
Preferred Experience: Minimum 1 year of supervisory experience managing hospital pharmacy employees in a 24/7 staffing model. Minimum 3 years of clinical pharmacist practice experience in a hospital practice setting with inpatient focus.
