Summary
The Behavioral Health Occupational Therapist selects and uses evaluations and interventions that promote mental health and support functioning in people with or at risk for psychiatric, substance abuse, or behavioral disorders. The role addresses physical, sensory, and cognitive function affecting patient's abilities to participate in daily life while considering their interests, values, habits, and roles. In addition, recognizes and emphasizes the complex interplay among individual variables, activity demands, and environmental demands. The BHOT analyzes, adapts or modifies the task or environment to support goal attainment and optimal engagement in occupation so that patients can develop and maintain healthy ways of living in their home, workplace and community. Responsible for supervising a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant and other staff as directed by the facility and under state licensure. The BHOT reports to the Director and/or Nurse Manager.
Education
Five to six years of formal training or education beyond the high school level (e.g., Masters Degree or five year program).
Certification, Registration, and Licensure
Licensure required: Current license in Occupational Therapy in the State of New Hampshire.
Certification required: Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification or equivalent course credentialed by American Heart Association
Certification required to obtain: Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) Part 1 and 2 within 6 months of hire.
Experience
Experience working with an interdisciplinary team. Must possess knowledge of growth and development across an adult and multicultural population. Previous experience in psychiatric and/or behavioral health field preferred.
Responsibilities
Screens and assesses to identify strengths, needs, problems and concerns regarding a patient's
occupational engagement and successful performance of their daily life tasks.
Conducts interventions based on assessment/evaluation results, developmental and life stage knowledge, and theoretical concepts of occupation.
Facilitates communication and supports patients occupational functioning/performance.
Responsible for milieu program development, facilitation of groups, and program evaluation to ensure
quality and effectiveness.
Documents intervention information, such as group participation and patient's progress toward attainment of desired outcomes.
Provides supervision to others related to milieu group facilitation and/or patients occupational
interventions/goals as required by the facility and/or state licensure.
Performs other duties as assigned.
