About the Role

The Senior Commercial Loan Underwriter is a key contributor to the credit and underwriting function within a local banking institution. This role is responsible for evaluating complex commercial loan requests, conducting thorough financial analysis and risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with bank lending policies. This position will be customer facing, traveling to meet with clients throughout the continental United States. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in commercial credit underwriting, demonstrate sound judgment in credit decision-making, and contribute to the strategic management of the loan portfolio. This position requires a high level of independence, technical proficiency, and leadership capability. The Senior Underwriter will collaborate with internal stakeholders across Sales, Servicing, and Executive Management, and may also serve as a mentor or supervisor to junior underwriting staff.

What You'll Do

  • Lead end‑to‑end underwriting
    for commercial relationships (typically $5M+), including due diligence, financial statement analysis (cash flow, leverage, DSCR), collateral assessment, covenant structuring, and industry risk review.
  • Prepare and present credit memos
    with clear recommendations and risk‑mitigation strategies to credit committees and senior stakeholders.
  • Engage directly with clients
    —conduct onsite visits and management interviews; travel ~2 days per week as needed across the continental U.S.
  • Ensure compliance
    with bank lending policies, regulatory requirements, and prudent portfolio management practices.
  • Partner cross‑functionally
    with Sales, Servicing, and Executive Management to close high‑quality deals efficiently.
  • Monitor portfolio performance
    —identify early warning signs, propose remedial actions, and inform strategic loan portfolio decisions.
  • Mentor junior underwriting staff,
    providing coaching on analysis quality, risk judgment, and documentation standards.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in
    Accounting, Finance
    , or related field.
  • 7–10+ years
    of commercial lending and underwriting experience.
  • Prior experience within
    commercial banking
    environments.
  • Demonstrated success underwriting
    commercial relationships of $5M+
    .
  • Willingness and ability to
    travel ~2 days/week
    to client sites across the continental U.S.

  • Master's degree in
    Business
    (e.g., MBA).
  • Experience with
    specialty lending lines
    (e.g., asset‑based lending, CRE, equipment finance, SBA, etc.).
