RN Shift Administrator
Job Summary
The RN Shift Administrator (House Supervisor) is responsible for the management of the hospital and for the direction and supervision of all clinical and non-clinical functions and activities in the absence of a Leadership Team Member. Is responsible for the quality of patient care and ensures that sufficient and properly prepared staff is available. Is knowledgeable of social, economic, and legal issues affecting the healthcare systems.

Pre-requisites
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Health Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred. Current RN VT License.

Experience:
Demonstrated ability in nursing practice and administration. Four years recent clinical experience required. Minimum of two years supervisory experience and minimum of three years staff experience required.

Other:
Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. He or she must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs and provide the care needed by the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient groups.

Certifications:
BLS, ACLS and NRP required within 6 months of hire. PALS strongly recommended

Off shift point of contact for staff

Physicians, employees, patients and their families, public, other health agencies.

Scope
Machinery or Equipment Used:
Electronic Health Records, Computers, calculator, telephones, copier, fax, monitors, and all equipment used by nursing for patient care

Physical Demands:
Extensive standing/walking. Heavy physical effort required to assist with lifting and moving patients.

Working Conditions:
Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness). Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations. Subject to many interruptions. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

Required Protective Equipment:
Eye protection, face protection, gown, mask, non-sterile medical gloves, and sterile medical gloves

Essential Functions

  • Assures adequate staffing and appropriate care levels and quality outcomes for all patients during assigned shifts.
  • Forecasts staffing needs and reassigns personnel among work units as needed. Identifies need for more personnel to be called in. Assists with patient care on temporary basis until crisis is past or more personnel arrive.
  • Gathers data, evaluates and adjusts the staff mix to accommodate the patient care needs, productivity and operating budget goals, and staff training goals with the hospital departments.
  • Promotes cooperation and flexibility of staff to achieve objectives and maintain positive inter-departmental relations
  • Coordinates staff/supplies for emergency procedure or other emergency situation.
  • Administers and coordinates NMC's institutional activities in the absence of Managers and Leadership Team
  • Receives and reviews preceding shift reports, unit reports, makes rounds in all clinical areas, and notes patient condition on patients who may present complicated needs
  • Communicates staff performance to the department manager
  • Assists all staff, providers, patients and families during times of crisis

  • Monitors scheduled staff and reassigns duties as needed
  • Communicates absences and staff performance issues to the appropriate departmental manager
  • Promotes co-operation among staff and positive interdepartmental communication between clinical and non-clinical departments
  • Emergency Preparedness:
  • Familiarizes self with all aspects of the Emergency Preparedness plan
  • Recognizes need for initializing the EP plan in response to external or internal crises in coordination with the Emergency Department physician and charge nurse
  • Is able to assume the role of Incident Commander until arrival of Leadership Team member
  • Participates in EP education and/or drills
