Description

The Midland Care Meals on Wheels program in Topeka delivers hot, nutritious meals each weekday to homebound older adults and people with disabilities in Shawnee, Jefferson and Douglas counties. The service is complemented by daily safety-and-wellness checks, which help ensure clients remain connected and supported while living independently in their homes.  The program generally covers adults aged 60+ who are homebound or isolated, or spouses of those eligible; donation-based contributions are encouraged, but income is not a barrier. Overall, this program helps older adults stay in their homes longer and avoid more intensive care settings by addressing both nutrition and social support.

The Meals on Wheels Support Assistant position offers a unique opportunity to rotate daily duties across driving, quality control with delivery bags for each route, hosting congregate dining sites, providing office support including phones, and delivery assistance.

  • Communicates effectively with staff and volunteers to support smooth operations.
  • Rotates daily duties across the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program, including driving, preparing delivery bags with meals, Congregate site support, and providing office support, including phone coverage.
  • Ensures meal bags are accurately packed and distributed to volunteers and dining centers.
  • Delivers meals and additional materials to clients as directed.
  • Prepares frozen, shelf-stable, and weekend meals for delivery.
  • Maintains accurate records, route sheets, and inventory of delivery bags.
  • Assists with surveys, fundraising events, and other program activities.
  • Ensures each route's hot and cold bags are accurately filled based on number and dietary type of meals.
  • Distributes necessary items for congregate dining centers.
  • Greets and assists volunteers with loading and unloading their vehicles.
  • Maintains and organizes accurate records.
  • Ensures the security and confidentiality of clients' information.
  • Prepares weekend and multi-day (frozen) meals for delivery.
  • Reports unusual occurrences to Supervisor and shares relevant information with other Midland Care staff.
  • Delivers additional materials to clients as provided by the office.
  • Participates in departmental and agency-wide quality improvement initiatives.
  • Recognizes personal limitations and seeks guidance from Supervisor when necessary.
  • Demonstrates effective collaboration with Midland Care staff across disciplines and departments.
  • Accepts and applies constructive performance feedback.
  • Adheres to agency standards for productivity, attendance, PTO usage, and overtime approval.
  • Manages time effectively to meet job responsibilities, attend meetings, and complete continuing education.
Qualifications
  • Minimum education requirement of high school graduation or equivalent GED.
  • Capacity to communicate with people representing vast differences of professional, cultural, social and economic backgrounds and ages.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
  • Must possess a valid Kansas or Missouri Driver's License, in force automobile liability insurance and maintain a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) that meets organization's insurability standard as defined by Midland policy.
