Shelter Supervisor

Position Summary:
The Shelter Shift Supervisor oversees the shift activities, handles client situations as they arise, provides direct support to shelter residents, visitors, and guests. The Shelter Shift Supervisor is responsible for the overall functioning of the emergency shelter program, to including individual supervision of the Residential Assistants (RAs). The Shelter Shift Supervisor serves as the point person and decision-maker ensuring that the RAs on shift operate as an effective team. This is an on-site position. A high emphasis is placed on quality assurance for this role.
Shift Schedule:
Monday - Friday 12:00am - 8:00am
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provides supervision to Residential Assistants and ensures appropriate intervention for all shelter residents, guests, and visitors, including but not limited to:
- De-escalation, and follow-up with residents and guests.
- Positive rapport-building and positive interactions with residents and guests.
- Familiarity with resources and providing information and referral to shelter residents as appropriate.
- Responds to shelter residents needs as needed to support RAs on shift.
- Conducts weekly and regular room checks, issues notice to residents regarding room status and follow up.
- Documents unusual incident and makes recommendations regarding follow up.
- Ensures that an end-of-shift email is sent to Director of Homeless Services and Shelter Group email to update on the events of the shift. Assures accurate completion of Shift Log.
- Assists with shelter intakes.
- Oversees client activities to ensure smooth shift.
- Anticipates and when possible, proactively plans for guest needs or concerns.
- Provides direct support services to shelter residents as needed.
- Reconciles the petty cash at the beginning and end of the shift.
- Ensures that the program meets all quality and quantity outcome metrics.
- Conducts weekly individual supervision sessions with RAs.
- Completes performance evaluations and yearly reviews.
- Provides training to new RAs.
- Meets with Emergency Shelter Program Manager and Director of Homeless Services regularly to discuss program operations, concerns, and potential improvements.
- Ability to work independently with confidence, as well as lead a team of professionals.
- Consistently adheres to shelter program policies, procedures, and schedule based upon emergency shelter needs.
- Arrives to shift on time and properly attired.
- Must be mature, empathetic, flexible and adaptable to varying situations and coverage needs.
- Participates in a brief meeting at the beginning of the shift to review shift business including status of EOS, expected new residents, alerts, etc.
- Acts as a liaison between the Emergency Shelter and other crisis programs, such as Care Control Center, Cold Weather Shelter, Code Blue Staff, Day Resource Center, etc.
- Assures that the lobby, counseling and open EOS rooms are clean. If the EOS, lobby, or other common or shared areas are not clean, the shelter supervisor will clean the space.
- Assures that the shelter offices are properly stocked with copies of paperwork, linens, toiletries, etc. If supplies are running low, the RAs will restock the room.
- Responsible for ensuring that the Shelter office is in clean and organized condition for the incoming shift.
- Assist in training new Emergency Shelter staff.
- Complete trainings as required by Grassroots Crisis Intervention.
- Skilled in the use of technology including telephones, computers (PC), laptops, software and email.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Accepts donations from the community, and place donations in dedicated spaces as applicable.
- Conduct rounds.
- Assists with training and orientation of new staff.
- Assists in the serving of meals and clean-up after meals as needed.
- Provide or assigned residential assistant to provide coverage for lobby or communal areas while security is completing grounds, on break, or during any unforced situations in which the lobby or other areas that need support.
- Participates on special committees as requested by the supervisor or Executive Director
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Human Services or AA degree and equivalent experience.
- At least 4 years direct service experience required.
- Possession of a valid driver's license required.
- Knowledge of homelessness issues a plus.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Must obtain required SERVSafe certification within six (6) months of hire.
Agency-wide Responsibilities:
- Reads 100% of all email communications and responds to emails in a timely manner prior or during their shifts.
- Participates in supervision, in-service training, and staff meetings.
- Maintains good working relationships with co-workers and positively contributes to group morale.
- Completes all administrative duties including time sheets, leave requests, etc.
- Participates in special task forces, committees, or special projects as needed.
- Uses appropriate channels of communication to resolve conflicts with other staff.
- Interacts with staff, clients, and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.

Work Conditions:
- Share office space with Residential Assistants, Case Managers, etc.
- Holiday and Evening coverage . Depending on scheduled shifts.
- Shares in on-call coverage.
- Hours are flexible to meet program needs.
- Must be able to lift 25lbs.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
