Systems Engineer – Ground-Based Defense Communications Systems

Location: Onsite – Huntsville, AL
Clearance: Active Secret (or ability to obtain and maintain)

Overview

We are seeking Systems Engineers at varying levels of experience to support the design, integration, and sustainment of ground-based missile defense communications systems. These systems enable secure, real-time command and control across critical defense networks.

In this role, you'll collaborate closely with hardware and software teams to define interfaces, analyze requirements, troubleshoot system issues, and deliver integrated solutions in an Agile development environment. This is a full-time onsite position; telework is not available.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform requirements decomposition, allocation, and interface definition between hardware and software systems.

  • Conduct fault detection, isolation, and root-cause analysis for hardware and system issues.

  • Support or lead system integration, verification, validation, and trade studies depending on experience.

  • Translate customer and mission needs into technical documentation and specifications.

  • Perform functional analyses, timeline assessments, and cost/risk evaluations.

  • Use Jira and Confluence to manage Agile backlogs, document progress, and track deliverables.

  • Participate in design reviews, readiness assessments, and cross-discipline technical discussions.

  • Contribute to or guide system architecture, performance analysis, and technical planning.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant experience; or Master's with 3+ years; or Ph.D. with 1+ year.

    • Candidates with additional experience will be considered for more senior responsibilities.

  • Working knowledge of the Systems Engineering "V" model.

  • Experience with hardware-to-software interfaces and diagnosing hardware or integration faults.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance (interim required to start).

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience supporting missile defense, radar, or command-and-control programs.

  • Experience developing Test Plans and Test Procedures for complex systems.

  • Familiarity with Environmental Qualification Testing (EQT) and MIL-STD compliance
    (e.g., MIL-STD-810, -461, -464, , and MIL-HDBK-344).

  • Proficiency with DOORS, Cameo (MBSE), and Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence).

  • Understanding of DevSecOps, containerization, and automated requirements testing.

  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies; Product Owner experience a plus.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines.
