Job HighlightsUAB Medicine's Heart & Vascular Center (HVC) is a 48-bed unit – including open bays, private rooms, and 15 procedure labs – designed to streamline preop and recovery care for cardiac, neuro interventional, and interventional radiology patients. Patient care on this unit supports the cath (ACL) lab, electrophysiology (EP) lab, vascular interventional radiology (VIR) lab, and neuro interventional lab procedure areas. Staff in this unit conduct assessments and procedures that could include cardioversions, ablations, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), angioplasty, nephrostomy, biliary drains, thrombectomy, and transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE). It's a dynamic, fast-paced environment where you are constantly learning and challenging your critical assessment skills as a nurse providing clinical care to a diverse patient population. Plus, it's a role where team members can experience instant gratification from helping make a positive outcome. Staff working in the cath lab, electrophysiology lab, and vascular interventional radiology lab procedure areas can expect to be on call 5-8 days per month, including after hours, weekends, and holidays. Staff must be able to respond within 30 minutes for emergent cases and can be given access to a room if needed. Ideal candidates have previous critical care experience, but it is not required. Additional training is provided for candidates without experience.

Job DescriptionTo assist the physician in diagnosing and treating cardiac and peripheral vascular disease and cardiac arrhythmias. To function in the roles of scrub assistant, monitor and circulator. To operate various equipment utilized in the cath lab.
QualificationsHigh School diploma or GED required. If job is in The Kirklin Clinic (TKC), one (1) year of experience in a cardiac catheterization setting may be preferred. Currently registered as a Registered Technologist (RT) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) OR currently licensed as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) by the Alabama Department of Public Health's (ADPH) Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Trauma required. Two years' experience in a cardiac catheterization lab may substitute for licensure/certification/registration requirement. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required within one (1) year from date of hire into classification. If job is in The Kirklin Clinic (TKC), currently registered as a Registered Technologist (R.T.(ARRT)) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) OR a Registered Cardiovascular Technologist (CVT) required. Two years of experience in a cardiac catheterization lab may substitute for licensure/certification/registration requirement. Currently certified with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required within one (1) year from date of hire into classification.
