Network Engineer

Our client, a government contractor supporting secure lab operations, is seeking a Network Engineer for a full-time onsite position in San Diego, CA. The Network Engineer will maintain and support several small networks in a development and testing lab environment, collaborating with system administrators, architects, WAN service providers, and information assurance teams throughout the software development lifecycle. The role involves implementing network changes, troubleshooting complex issues, and recommending hardware and software solutions to ensure operational reliability and compliance with DoD standards.

What You'll Do

  • Design, configure, and maintain wired and wireless LAN environments to support development and testing activities.
  • Create router, switch, and wireless configurations and ensure network connectivity across multiple devices.
  • Troubleshoot network performance issues, update configurations, and maintain system availability and security.
  • Develop and maintain network documentation including physical, logical, and data flow diagrams using Microsoft Visio.
  • Serve as the network subject matter expert and liaison for the lab environment, providing technical guidance and recommendations.
  • Implement network configuration management and apply DoD security best practices.
  • Establish and maintain network backup policies and improve existing monitoring and alerting systems.
  • Collaborate with system administrators, system architects, and information assurance teams to align network infrastructure with project requirements.
  • Modify switching and routing infrastructure to support concurrent development and testing efforts.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for repeatable network tasks and maintenance.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, and a minimum of 5 years of experience in network engineering, architecture, or administration.
  • Hands-on experience architecting and supporting LAN environments (wired and wireless).
  • Expertise with TCP/IP routing, subnetting, and Layer 2 switching infrastructure.
  • Experience with network configuration management, firewall troubleshooting, and applying DoD network security guidance.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring tools and best practices in network maintenance and design.
  • Proficiency in Aruba Wireless technologies.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Certifications required: CompTIA Security+ and JNCIA-Junos or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).

  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP Enterprise).
  • Juniper Networks Certified Internet Specialist – Enterprise (JNCIS-ENT).
  • Experience with Microsoft Visio for diagramming and documentation.
  • Prior experience working within a DoD or government lab environment.
