About the Role
Project Support Services (PSS) is seeking an Assistant Land Surveyor to support the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), one of the nation's largest K–12 public school systems.
In this role, you will assist the Land Survey Party Chief in conducting field surveys that support school construction, modernization, safety upgrades, and campus planning. This position is ideal for professionals who enjoy hands-on field work, precision measurement, and supporting essential capital improvement projects across LAUSD's 1,000+ schools and facilities.
Your work will directly contribute to accurate site data, safe construction practices, and reliable project planning across the District.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Land Survey Party Chief with field surveys, including boundary, topographic, and as-built surveys.
- Set up, operate, and maintain survey equipment such as total stations, smart levels, GPS, and data collectors.
- Measure distances, angles, and elevations with precision; record survey data following district and industry standards.
- Maintain clear, detailed field notes, sketches, and photographic documentation.
- Upload, organize, and prepare raw survey data for CAD processing.
- Mark, maintain, and verify survey control points, stakes, and monuments in the field.
- Care for, calibrate, inventory, and properly store survey instruments, tools, and safety gear.
- Provide rapid field support for urgent survey needs, including facility damage assessments or construction-related issues.
- Follow all safety protocols, including proper traffic control procedures when required.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Requirements (Must Be Met)Experience:
- Three (3) years full-time professional experience performing routine, non-technical work in a surveying party, including at least one (1) year of on-the-job field training.
- Experience interpreting civil engineering drawings.
- Experience setting up and operating total stations, levels, GPS, and performing accurate line, elevation, and position measurements.
Education:
Option 1:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Surveying (must include courses in plane and route field surveying)
- With three (3) years of experience
OR
Option 2:
- Two (2) years of civil engineering coursework
- Four (4) years of experience as a member of a field survey party performing land surveying work
- Includes at least one (1) year of on-the-job field training
Knowledge & Skills:
- Ability to make precise field measurements
- Ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations and prepare basic engineering sketches
- Proficiency with CAD software
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Certification:
- Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) Certificate issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists
Pay: $116, $124,000.00 per year
