Job Description
Role Summary/Purpose:
Synchrony is one of the largest consumer financial services companies in the U.S., serving over 60 million customers and processing more than $150 billion annually. We power the digital experiences behind hundreds of brand partners—experiences that must work seamlessly and securely at scale.
We're looking for a leader who blends deep technical expertise with a people-first approach to managing engineering teams. In this role, you'll guide multiple front-end teams and technical leaders, ensuring our talent is set up for success, our delivery is predictable and high-quality, and our engineering community continues to grow stronger together.
You'll act as a bridge between engineering, product, and design, removing friction, fostering innovation, and keeping our teams aligned to both business priorities and best practices. This isn't a "manage from a distance" role; you'll coach, step in when needed, and be accountable for the health, output, and cohesion of your teams.
Our Way of Working
We're proud to offer you choice and flexibility. At Synchrony, our way of working allows you to have the option to work from home near one of our Hubs or come into one of our offices. Occasionally you may be required to commute to our nearest office for in person engagement activities such as business or team meetings, training and culture events.
What You'll Do
People & Talent
- Ensure optimal staffing levels and manage staffing transitions thoughtfully.
- Qualify and hire top-tier engineering talent, coordinating with vendors and internal partners.
- Manage direct reports, coach technical leads on Synchrony's ecosystem, and address performance or interpersonal issues promptly.
- Support onboarding and goal setting for new hires.
Community Of Practice & Developer Experience
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and best practice adoption across the front-end engineering community.
- Maintain and create documentation, ensuring knowledge is shared and accessible.
- Identify and resolve inefficiencies or friction in developer experience.
- Meet regularly with peers to identify and address common challenges.
Strategic Planning & Delivery
- Ensure plans align with CoP goals and best practices, avoiding duplication of effort.
- Review quarterly plans before commitment to flag risks or misalignments early.
- Maintain an understanding of and champion common architectural patterns used across the organization.
- Step in to resolve conflicts between product, design, and engineering, reducing delivery "swirl."
- Support tech leads when needed—rolling up your sleeves when the situation calls for it.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Build strong relationships with Product, Design, Backend, and other partner teams.
- Connect with agile train leadership monthly to identify operational improvements.
- Promote collaboration across teams to deliver cohesive, customer-focused solutions.
Production & Operational Excellence
- Provide on call support and step in during escalations.
- Ensure high-quality, scalable, and maintainable front-end solutions.
- Drive CI/CD best practices using our deployment stack.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, plus 5+ years of experience in web application development, design, and architecture.
- Proven experience leading people on high-performing teams.
- Strong background in ReactJS, TypeScript, NextJS, Cypress
- Experience with AWS cloud services
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern DevOps practices.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence across organizational levels.
- Ability and flexibility to travel for business as required
Why You'll Love This Role
- Impact at scale: Your work will influence not just your teams, but engineering practices across Synchrony.
- People-first leadership: You'll mentor, coach, and grow talent—while still having the chance to get hands-on when needed.
- Collaboration-focused: You'll be the connective tissue between engineering and the rest of the business.
- Continuous improvement: We're serious about building better—whether that's process, tooling, or technical execution.
