Tooling Quality Engineer
. This role is responsible for managing the appearance approval process, serving as the key on-site liaison with tooling vendors, and ensuring texture and surface quality across plastic components.

Job Duties:

  • Serve as primary on-site representative at external tooling and texture suppliers
  • Oversee application and verification of A-surfaces, gloss levels, texture, and color breaks
  • Manage the Appearance Approval Process (AAP) and supplier-level craftsmanship buy-offs
  • Detect and resolve appearance risks related to injection molding and texture early in the process
  • Translate complex studio and design intent into executable tool instructions
  • Ensure adherence to styling-critical standards and bill of design criteria
  • Provide high-fidelity reporting on texture and appearance issues to internal teams

Skills & Experience

Required:

  • 10+ years of experience in Craftsmanship, Perceived Quality, or Tooling Engineering within an automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier
  • Strong knowledge of plastic part development and injection molding processes
  • Expertise in texture application methods including laser etching and chemical graining
  • Exceptional visual acuity; able to pass a Munsell Hue Test with Superior Discrimination or equivalent
  • Experience managing vendors and driving quality standards on-site
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field

Desired:

  • Familiarity with Critical to Styling (CTS) catalogs and Bill of Design requirements
  • Experience bridging communication between studio/design and manufacturing teams
  • Knowledge of dual texture and complex texture strategy execution
  • Proficiency in texture compliance documentation and appearance milestone tracking
