Position Overview
The Substance Use Disorder Therapist provides individual, group, and family therapy services to clients with substance use disorders and co-occurring behavioral health conditions. This role is responsible for assessing client needs, developing treatment plans, facilitating therapeutic interventions, and ensuring compliance with clinical and regulatory standards. The therapist collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to promote recovery, support relapse prevention, and help clients achieve long-term sobriety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Conduct biopsychosocial assessments, intake evaluations, and ongoing clinical assessments for assigned clients.
· Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with clients and treatment teams.
· Facilitate group therapy sessions (average 2–3 per day) on topics including relapse prevention, coping skills, trauma, and recovery education.
· Provide individual therapy and family counseling as clinically appropriate.
· Document all services accurately and timely in accordance with clinical, state, and federal requirements.
· Coordinate care with case managers, physicians, nurses, and support staff to ensure continuity of care.
· Attend and participate in clinical meetings, treatment team reviews, and case consultations.
· Support discharge planning and transition of clients to aftercare programs or community resources.
· Maintain licensure and continuing education requirements as mandated by state and professional boards.
· Ensure compliance with HIPAA, Joint Commission, CMS, and state regulations.
Required Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies
· Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field required.
· Active state licensure (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, LMHC or equivalent) required; Addiction-specific certification (e.g., LAC, CAC, or similar) strongly preferred.
· Strong knowledge of evidence-based practices in addiction treatment and co-occurring disorders.
· Excellent group facilitation, documentation, and crisis intervention skills.
· Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
· Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred Experience, Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
· Minimum 2 years of clinical experience in substance abuse or behavioral health treatment preferred.
· Experience in behavioral health or substance use treatment strongly preferred.
· Strong knowledge of behavioral health facility regulations, licensing, and payer requirements.
Relevant Working Conditions and Physical Demands
· Ability to sit, walking, and stand for extended periods
· Occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds (e.g., program materials, group room setup)
· Ability to engage with clients in high-stress or emotionally intense situations
· Regular use of computer systems for documentation and reporting
· Work is performed primarily in office, residential and outpatient behavioral health settings.
· Shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
· Collaborative team environment within a healthcare or behavioral health treatment setting
