ABOUT THE ROLE

As a
CNC Plasma Operator
at TASSCO, you will play a key role in safely and efficiently producing high-quality cut parts from steel plate. You'll be responsible for machine setup, operation, inspection, and maintenance while coordinating with loaders, material handlers, and downstream teams. This role requires strong attention to detail, safe material handling, and the ability to follow established processes while also problem-solving when challenges arise.

You'll contribute directly to schedule attainment, product quality, and customer satisfaction by ensuring parts are cut accurately and equipment is maintained properly.

LOCATION:
Birmingham, Alabama

SHIFT:
Second Shift (3:00 PM – 11:30 PM)

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operate CNC plasma cutting equipment to produce parts according to job/work orders and provided programs.
• Verify job details before cutting: material type, plate size/thickness, heat numbers, part counts, and consumables.
• Load, align, and secure plates on cutting tables using overhead cranes and forklifts; cross-train to perform table loader duties when coverage is required.
• Monitor cut quality, making minor adjustments to feed rates, gas pressures, or torch height as needed.
• Inspect finished parts for accuracy, edge quality, and dimensional compliance.
• Segregate and label finished parts, handle remnants and scrap appropriately, and maintain accurate counts.
• Perform daily preventative maintenance, consumable checks, and housekeeping around the CNC plasma equipment.
• Document production activity, deviations, and quality issues.
• Collaborate with teammates to ensure safe, efficient workflow across shifts.

KEY PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

• First 3 Months:
  Learn TASSCO processes, safety practices, and equipment setup. Operate CNC plasma equipment under supervision, cut repeat jobs, and assist with material handling (i.e. step in to cover table loader functions as needed).
• First 6 Months:
  Operate independently on standard jobs, perform quality inspections, and troubleshoot common issues. Maintain accurate documentation and assist with shift handoffs.
• First Year:
  Run complex jobs with minimal oversight, consistently achieve quality and schedule targets, demonstrate safe crane operation, and take ownership of equipment care and continuous improvement initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Required Skills

• Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to follow instructions
• Ability to read a tape measure, interpret basic blueprints, and perform accurate measurements
• Ability to lift up to 70 lbs. and safely handle materials using overhead cranes and forklifts and proper lifting techniques
• Clear communication and teamwork with loaders, downstream teams, and support staff
• Adaptability to varied jobs, materials, and priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Attention to detail, ownership, and problem-solving in setup, cutting, inspections, and documentation
• Effective time management and multitasking to meet schedules and maintain equipment

Preferred:

• Minimum 1 year CNC plasma or related machine operation experience.
• Ability to read and interpret fabrication blueprints.
• Proficiency with measuring tools (tape measure, calipers, micrometers, etc.).
• Competence with fractions/decimals conversions and dimensional math.
• Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands/arms, and communicate clearly.
• Must safely handle heavy plate material with assistance from hoists, cranes, and forklifts.
