BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is seeking an Environmental Review Program Biologist (IF&W Resource Biologist) for the Environmental Review Program. The program is charged with assessment of pre-applications and permit applications submitted under various state and federal laws and coordinating Department recommendations for species and habitat protection measures. The primary responsibilities include reviewing project applications filed under state, federal, and local regulatory jurisdictions that affect land and water resources in the State of Maine. Position duties may also include entering relevant information into the Department's environmental review database, helping to track project deadlines and outcomes, responding to public information and data requests in a timely manner, and other related tasks as necessary. Work will be conducted primarily in the office, with some related field investigations as needed. Specific job duties may vary depending on the candidate's experience and skills. The position is located within the Habitat Conservation Section and is based in IF&Ws Augusta office.
Position duties include:
- Knowledge of Maine's inland fisheries, wildlife, at-risk plant species and important habitats as well as Maine Biogeography.
- Awareness of and ability to interpret environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
- Ability to evaluate complex proposals affecting natural resources.
- Experience and ability effectively communicating scientific concepts.
- Analytical and organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of ArcGIS as well as proficiency in computer operations (e.g., Excel, Word, Adobe, etc.)
- Ability to work, communicate, and coordinate as part of a professional team.
- Ability to work on potentially contentious issues in a professional manner.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Fisheries or Wildlife Management, or related field -AND- two (2) years of progressively responsible related laboratory or field research and/or management experience. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
Preferences will be given to candidates with knowledge of Maine's species and habitats as well as applicable state and federal natural resources, environmental and land use laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Preference will also be given to candidates with excellent verbal and written communication skills with a desire to make a positive difference for Maine's natural resources.
