Job Overview:
As a Cook at Messina's Catering and Events, you will be responsible for preparing, cooking, and presenting a variety of hot and/or cold food items for various meal periods, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special/catered events. General Responsibilities:
- Prepare and cook to order foods that may require short preparation time.
- Prepare food in accordance with current applicable federal, state, and corporate standards, guidelines, and regulations to ensure high-quality food service is provided.
- Read food orders or receive verbal instructions on food required by the patron and prepare and cook food according to instructions.
- Always provide the highest quality of service to customers.
- Follow basic recipes and/or product directions for preparing, seasoning, cooking, tasting, carving, and serving soups, meats, vegetables, desserts, and other foodstuffs for consumption in eating establishments.
- Prepare foods under direct supervision or instruction by operating a variety of kitchen equipment to measure and mix ingredients, washing, peeling, cutting, and shredding fruits and vegetables, and trimming and cutting meat, poultry or fish for culinary use.
- Taste products, read menus, estimate food requirements, check production, and keep records to accurately plan production requirements and requisition supplies and equipment.
- Clean and sanitize workstations and equipment and follow all Messina's Catering and Events, client, and regulatory rules and procedures.
- Attend all allergy and foodborne illness in-service training.
- Comply with all Messina's Catering and Events HACCP policies and procedures.
- Report all accidents and injuries in a timely manner.
- Comply with all company safety and risk management policies and procedures.
- Participate in regular safety meetings, safety training, and hazard assessments.
- Attend training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated.
- Receive inventory, move, and lift foodstuffs and supplies, and prepare meals for customers requiring special diets.
- Produce some batch goods using basic cooking techniques.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Essential Functions:
- Prepare and cook a variety of hot and cold foods according to recipes or instructions, ensuring consistent quality and taste.
- Operate kitchen equipment and perform tasks such as chopping, slicing, mixing, washing, and cooking ingredients.
- Maintain clean and sanitized workstations and equipment in compliance with food safety standards, including HACCP guidelines.
- Attend required food safety and allergy training sessions.
- Receive, store, and manage inventory and supplies; estimate food requirements and assist with requisitioning as needed.
- Provide the highest quality of service to customers and maintain a positive, professional attitude.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with team members, supervisors, and other departments.
- Work independently or under supervision while adapting to a flexible schedule, including mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Assist with batch cooking and preparing meals for customers with special dietary needs.
- Stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 40 pounds, bending, reaching, and pushing or pulling items.
- Participate in safety meetings and comply with all company safety policies and procedures.
- Report any accidents or injuries promptly and follow established risk management protocols.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Job Qualifications
Experience/Knowledge:
- High School diploma, GED or equivalent experience preferred.
- 0 to 2 years of related work experience.
- Knowledge of basic operation of equipment and cash-handling procedures preferred.

License/Qualifications:
- Certifications: Servesafe or willingness to obtain preferred but not required

Physical Requirements:
- Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus, with or without corrective lenses.
- Significant walking or other means of mobility.
- Ability to work in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 8 hours).
- Ability to reach, bend, stoop, push and/or pull, and frequently lift up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift/move 40 pounds.
Working Conditions:
- Generally in an indoor setting; however, may assist with outdoor activities and events.
- Varying schedule to include evenings, holidays, weekends, and extended hours as business dictates.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is primarily in a controlled, temperate environment; however, may be exposed to heat or cold during support of outside activities.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
- Working on-site at the company location is a required part of the job.
