Hospice Volunteer Coordinator
A hospice volunteer coordinator is responsible for managing all aspects of a hospice's volunteer program, ensuring volunteers are recruited, trained, and supported to provide essential non-medical support to patients and families while maintaining regulatory compliance. Key Responsibilities. The main duties of a hospice volunteer coordinator include:
- Program Management: Plan, coordinate, and manage all volunteer activities and ensure the volunteer program is in compliance with Medicare Hospice Conditions of Participation and other regulations.
- Recruitment and Screening: Develop and implement strategies to recruit a dedicated team of volunteers. This includes interviewing applicants, conducting background checks, and ensuring all health screening requirements (e.g., TB tests) are met.
- Training and Orientation: Organize and deliver initial orientation and ongoing training sessions to prepare volunteers for their roles. This training covers the hospice philosophy, the stages of grief, appropriate duties (e.g., companionship, errand running), and what tasks volunteers cannot perform (e.g., administering medication).
- Placement and Scheduling: Assess the needs of patients, families, and staff, and match the right volunteers to the appropriate assignments. This involves creating and managing volunteer schedules to ensure coverage of all needs.
- Support and Supervision: Provide ongoing support, supervision, and mentorship to volunteers. This includes conducting performance evaluations, offering regular feedback, and providing emotional support or bereavement counseling to help volunteers cope with loss.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and up-to-date volunteer records, including hours worked, activities, training documentation, and patient care notes in the electronic medical record (EMR) system. The coordinator is also responsible for tracking monthly statistics and creating reports on volunteer impact for senior staff or funders.
- Community Engagement: Act as a liaison between the hospice and the community to promote volunteer services and recruit new volunteers through outreach, events, and public speaking.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Participate as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team (IDT) to ensure effective communication and integration of volunteer services into the patient's overall plan of care.
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience: A minimum of two years of experience in a healthcare or hospice setting is often preferred, with experience in volunteer management or supervision being highly valued.
- Education: An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in social work, business administration, or a related field is typically required, though equivalent experience may be accepted.
- Skills: Essential skills include strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal abilities, a deep understanding of the hospice philosophy, compassion, and proficiency with computer systems and volunteer management software.
