About the Role:

The Ophthalmic Technician specializing in Diagnostic Testing plays a critical role in supporting ophthalmologists by performing specialized diagnostic procedures that aid in the detection, diagnosis, and management of eye diseases and conditions. This position involves operating advanced ophthalmic equipment to conduct tests such as visual field analysis, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus photography, and other diagnostic imaging techniques. The technician ensures the accuracy and quality of test results by preparing patients, calibrating instruments, and maintaining detailed records. Collaboration with the clinical team is essential to interpret preliminary findings and facilitate effective patient care plans. Ultimately, this role contributes significantly to improving patient outcomes through precise diagnostic support within a healthcare setting in SAOW.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of an accredited Ophthalmic Technician or Ophthalmic Medical Assistant program.
  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician (e.g., JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or equivalent).
  • Experience in performing ophthalmic diagnostic tests and operating related equipment, that includes, but is not limited to: VF, OCT, A-scans, B-scans, and other biometry tests.
  • Basic understanding of ocular anatomy, physiology, and common eye diseases.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems specific to ophthalmology.
  • Knowledge of additional diagnostic modalities such as fluorescein angiography or electroretinography.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of diagnostic ophthalmic tests including visual field testing, OCT, fundus photography, and pachymetry according to established protocols.
  • Prepare patients for diagnostic procedures by explaining the process, answering questions, and ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain ophthalmic diagnostic equipment to ensure optimal performance and accurate test results.
  • Record and document test results accurately in patient records and communicate findings to ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals.
  • Assist in scheduling diagnostic tests and managing patient flow to optimize clinic efficiency.
  • Maintain compliance with healthcare regulations, infection control standards, and safety protocols within the diagnostic testing environment.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with advancements in ophthalmic diagnostic technology.
