HL7 / EDI Integration Engineer
We are seeking an experienced HL7 / EDI Integration Engineer to support our Healthliant Ventures team. This position has two main responsibilities: first, extracting and delivering high-quality data sets from health system applications, including Epic, PACS, and other clinical systems to our portfolio companies. Second, this role is responsible for developing, managing, and optimizing both data extraction and data integration processes. The ideal candidate brings extensive experience with Epic and other healthcare-specific data sources and proven expertise in healthcare data integration and interoperability standards. Please note that we will not be interviewing candidates who do not have experience working directly with health systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Integration and Interoperability: Lead comprehensive data integration initiatives combining data from multiple healthcare sources to create unified, comprehensive data sets for analysis. Develop and maintain integration workflows using Epic Bridges and other healthcare interoperability platforms to ensure seamless data flow between systems while maintaining data integrity and quality.
Healthcare System Integration: Design, implement, and maintain real-time and batch integration solutions connecting Epic with external healthcare systems, laboratory information systems (LIS), radiology information systems (RIS), and third-party clinical applications using industry-standard protocols and interfaces.
Interface Development and Management: Build and maintain healthcare data interfaces using HL7, FHIR, and other healthcare interoperability standards. Monitor interface performance, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and ensure compliance with healthcare data exchange requirements.
Data Extraction and Management: Design and implement efficient data extraction processes from Epic (Clarity, Caboodle), PACS, and other clinical systems to support analytics and reporting needs.
Cross-Functional Support: Collaborate closely with data analysts, IT, clinical teams, and external healthcare partners to ensure data integration meets project requirements and aligns with health system goals. Support clinical workflows by ensuring integrated data is accessible and actionable.
Documentation and Compliance: Document extraction and integration processes, maintain interface specifications, and ensure compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, and organizational data governance standards. Maintain comprehensive documentation of data lineage and integration mappings.
Quality Assurance: Perform data validation and troubleshooting across integrated systems to identify and resolve data discrepancies, ensuring data quality and accuracy throughout the integration pipeline.
Mentorship and Collaboration: Provide technical guidance to junior team members and foster collaboration across departments to support data-driven decision-making and integrated healthcare analytics.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Information Systems, Health Informatics, or a related field.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in healthcare data extraction and integration, including working with Epic (Clarity, Caboodle), PACS systems, and healthcare interoperability platforms. Experience with CorePoint highly preferred.
Certification Requirements: Epic Bridges certification required. Additional Epic certifications (Clarity Data Model, Caboodle, or other Epic modules) strongly preferred.
Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in SQL and ETL tools; extensive experience with healthcare data integration standards including HL7 v2.x, HL7 FHIR, DICOM, and healthcare APIs. Experience with integration platforms, middleware solutions, and data visualization tools is a plus.
Healthcare Integration Expertise: Demonstrated experience with Epic Bridges implementation and management, healthcare interface development, and integration of multiple healthcare systems. Strong understanding of healthcare workflows and how data integration supports clinical operations.
Healthcare Knowledge: Deep understanding of healthcare data structures, including EHR and imaging data, with hands-on experience integrating Epic, PACS, LIS, RIS, and related healthcare systems. Knowledge of healthcare data governance and master data management principles.
Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex data integration issues, resolve interface connectivity problems, and ensure data consistency across integrated systems.
Compliance Awareness: Comprehensive knowledge of HIPAA, HITECH, and healthcare data security best practices, particularly as they relate to data integration and interoperability.
Communication: Clear communication skills to collaborate effectively with internal health system clinical and technical stakeholders, as well as external portfolio company stakeholders. Ability to explain complex integration concepts and data issues to non-technical audiences and document technical specifications for diverse audiences.
Organizational Skills: Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple integration projects simultaneously, coordinate with external healthcare partners, and meet critical healthcare system deadlines.
