The Fluroescein Angiographer is responsible for capturing high-quality diagnostic images of the retina and its blood vessels using specialized cameras after a fluorescent dye is injected into the patient's bloodstream. This crucial role provides ophthalmologists with visual data to diagnose and monitor various retinal diseases.
Key responsibilities
- Perform ophthalmic imaging: Conduct fluorescein angiography (FA), color fundus photography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
- Patient care and preparation: Explain procedures to patients, address their concerns, and ensure their comfort and safety. This includes administering dilating eye drops and injecting the fluorescein dye intravenously.
- Equipment operation and maintenance: Operate and maintain complex imaging equipment, including fundus cameras, and ensure proper calibration and functionality.
- Data management and analysis: Accurately document patient information, record test results, and collaborate with ophthalmologists to analyze images for diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Quality control: Adhere to strict protocols for safety and image quality. This also involves ensuring that images are correctly labeled and stored, often within an electronic health record (EHR) system.
Preferred skills and qualifications
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum, but 1-2 years experience in ophthalmic technology or a related field is often preferred.
- Technical proficiency: Strong understanding of fluorescein angiography and other retinal imaging techniques is essential. Proficiency with imaging software is also required.
- Certification: While not always mandatory, certification is highly desirable. Certifications include:
- Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA): Offered by the Ophthalmic Photographers' Society (OPS), it demonstrates a high level of proficiency in fundus photography and fluorescein angiography.
- Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Assistant (COA): Provided by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) and is preferred by many employers.
- Experience: Most positions require prior experience in ophthalmic photography or clinical settings. Experience with digital imaging systems and different types of angiography is often sought. If there is no previous experience in ophthalmology, 1-2 years of phlebotomy is REQUIRED.
- Interpersonal skills: The ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with patients and work collaboratively within a healthcare team is critical.
- Attention to detail: Meticulous attention to detail is necessary for capturing high-quality images and accurate documentation.
