New Lothrop, Michigan, United States Gross Construction Full time

Diesel Truck & Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Summary

The Diesel Truck & Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing our fleet of diesel trucks (including semis), heavy construction equipment, and occasional light-duty vehicles. This role is hands-on and mechanically focused – keeping equipment safe, reliable, and job-ready through strong repair skills, preventative maintenance, and quality workmanship.

Because today's equipment is increasingly electronic, this position also requires solid diagnostic ability using scan tools and OEM software when needed to accurately identify issues and reduce downtime.

Accountable To: Shop Superintendent

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Diesel & Equipment Repair (Core Function)

  • Perform mechanical repairs on diesel trucks and heavy equipment including engines, drivetrains, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems
  • Diagnose and correct mechanical failures efficiently while maintaining high workmanship standards
  • Complete repairs that hold up in the field, not temporary "get-by" fixes

Preventative Maintenance & Inspections

  • Perform routine service and preventative maintenance on trucks and equipment to reduce breakdowns
  • Conduct inspections to identify wear, leaks, unsafe conditions, and developing issues before failures happen
  • Recommend repairs and service timing based on equipment condition, usage, and job demands

Diagnostic Troubleshooting

  • Troubleshoot equipment issues using logical step-by-step diagnostics (mechanical and electronic)
  • Use scan tools and diagnostic software to support accurate troubleshooting and verify repairs
  • Work with (or learn) diagnostic platforms such as Cummins INSITE and John Deere Service Advisor
  • Interpret fault codes, sensor readings, and system performance data to locate root causes

Fleet Support / Small Shop Flexibility

  • Support a small-shop environment where priorities shift based on fleet needs
  • Assist with occasional repairs and maintenance on pickups and light-duty vehicles as needed
  • Maintain tools, work areas, and shop organization to keep work efficient and safe

Field Service (As Needed)

  • Provide field repairs and jobsite service calls when required to keep crews operational
  • Troubleshoot breakdowns in the field and make safe, effective repairs under jobsite conditions
  • Communicate clearly with leadership about repair status, parts needed, and equipment readiness

Safety, Documentation & Communication

  • Follow all safety standards and maintain a clean, organized work area
  • Document repairs and service performed, including parts used and recommended follow-up items
  • Communicate equipment status clearly so the operations team can plan confidently

CORE VALUES IN ACTION (How We Expect This Role to Show Up)

Selfless Leadership

  • You understand your work impacts the entire field operation and you prioritize repairs that keep crews moving
  • You help the team succeed by keeping equipment reliable and communicating equipment status clearly
  • You pitch in where needed without ego because we are a small shop and teamwork matters

Open Growth

  • You stay curious and keep learning as diesel and equipment technology continues to evolve
  • You are willing to adopt new diagnostic processes, tools, software, and repair standards
  • You ask questions when needed rather than guessing and creating avoidable rework

Work Hard

  • You maintain a steady pace and strong effort throughout the day
  • You handle tough jobs, urgent repairs, and shifting priorities without cutting corners
  • You take pride in doing the work the right way even when it's busy

Ownership

  • You diagnose accurately, repair completely, and verify repairs before returning equipment to service
  • You treat trucks, equipment, tools, and the shop like they belong to you
  • You think ahead and communicate issues early so breakdowns can be prevented

Direct Dialogue

  • You communicate clearly about what's wrong, what it will take to fix it, and what the timeline looks like
  • You speak up if something is unsafe or needs attention now
  • You are honest when you don't know something and take initiative to find the right answer

QUALIFICATIONS

Core Values Fit (Required)

  • Strong knowledge of diesel systems and heavy equipment repair practices
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues independently and make sound repair decisions

Diagnostic Strength (Preferred)

  • Experience using scan tools and OEM diagnostic software on modern diesel trucks and equipment

  • You operate with ownership, communicate clearly, and support the team in a small-shop environment
