Job Overview

GL Power is seeking an experienced CNC Setup Programmer skilled in both mills and lathes. In this role, you will be responsible for programming, setting up, and proving out CNC machines to ensure efficient, high-quality production. The ideal candidate has a strong background in CNC programming, tooling, and setup, with the ability to troubleshoot, train others, and support continuous improvement efforts.

Essential Functions

  • Program, set up, and prove out CNC mills and lathes using blueprints and specifications.
  • Edit and optimize programs to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Perform first article inspections ("first good part") to verify setups and dimensions.
  • Train and mentor CNC operators on setups, programming adjustments, and best practices.
  • Monitor production workflow to maintain on-time delivery and part quality.
  • Troubleshoot program, tooling, and machining issues to minimize downtime.
  • Recommend and implement tooling or process improvements for quality and productivity gains.
  • Maintain and track tooling inventory; request replacements as needed.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and machine upkeep.
  • Support quality control inspections, gage setups, and dimensional checks.
  • Operate manual machines and perform secondary operations (deburring, finishing) when required.

Core Competencies

  • Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills.
  • Proficiency in CNC programming and setup for both mills and lathes.
  • Knowledge of G-code, offsets, tooling, chucks, and fixtures.
  • Skilled in using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gages).
  • Ability to diagnose and correct machining, setup, and programming issues.
  • Experience with CNC controls (Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, or similar).
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical or trade school training in CNC machining/programming preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of CNC programming and setup experience on both mills and lathes.
  • Experience with multi-axis machining a plus.

Job Conditions / Requirements

  • Work performed in a precision machining / manufacturing environment.
  • Standard day shift; overtime or alternate shifts as needed.
  • Must provide personal tools.
  • Regular collaboration with production, engineering, and quality teams.
