GENERAL OVERVIEW

The City of Steamboat Springs is seeking a knowledgeable, organized, and passionate Course Director for the Town Challenge Ski Ascent Race Series. This individual must have extensive knowledge of the Steamboat Springs cross-country ski trails (specifically Emerald Mountain/Howelsen Hill and Mount Werner). Previous race and/or event management experience a plus.  

Date of Employment: From date of hire – April 1, 2026

Time Requirements: Part-time position. Hours will vary depending on the week/day and race series schedule. Total of approximately 200 hours throughout the winter. Race weeks employee can expect to work 36-40 hours. On race weeks, employee must be able to work a portion of the day on Tuesday and Thursday and all day Wednesday with no other conflicts or commitments.

Wage: $ $33.24 / Hour (DOQ)

Reports To: Recreation Supervisor – Athletic Programs  

THE QUALIFIED INDIVIDUAL:

Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while always espousing safety.

• Responsible for all course design and development in collaboration with the Recreation Supervisor, prior to the start of the series and throughout the winter.
• Responsible for providing detailed, written course descriptions, and assist in the development of course maps for each race in coordination with the Recreation Supervisor.
• Manage all aspects of course set-up including the creation of course signage (pre-season) and marking of courses (typically on Tuesday/Wednesday prior to each race).
• Pre-ride courses prior to each race to ensure all course signage is intact and accurate.
• Coordinate, train and manage course marshals/volunteers at each race and throughout the season.
• Assist with any additional pre-race logistics and set-up as requested.
• Assist with course sweeps, post-race clean-up and post-race parties as needed.
• Remove all course signage no later than 5 PM the day after each race.
• Additional duties may include assisting with Town Challenge Ski Ascent Race Series marketing and promotional efforts, sponsor outreach and general administrative tasks as needed.  

WE ARE SEEKING THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:

• Working knowledge of basic computer programs including the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Basic mapping & GPS knowledge a plus to help in the development of course maps.
• Flexible schedule with the ability to work primarily on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
• Race experience, knowledge of local trails, and ski mountaineering enthusiast a must.
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs and have the physical stamina to ski for extended periods of time across various trail and weather conditions.
• Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to follow instructions and work with a team and independently.
• Ski Mountaineering skis and use of a cell phone required. Potential for small equipment stipend.
• Ability to prioritize time sensitive tasks and be flexible with general job duties and schedules.
