Job Title: Outside Machinist (J1/J2)

Job Location: Norfolk, VA

Pay Rate: $25 – $27 per hour (DOE)

Security Requirement: Must be DBIDS Eligible

Position Overview:

We are seeking experienced Outside Machinists (J1/J2) to join our team at a shipyard in Norfolk, VA. Candidates must be DBIDS eligible, local to the area, and able to interview in person. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in shipboard mechanical systems, machinery installation, overhaul, and alignment in a shipyard environment.

Education & Experience Requirements:

Outside Machinist J2:

  • Minimum 3 years of directly related experience in a shipyard environment.
  • Must meet all Journeyman 1 Outside Machinist requirements.

Outside Machinist J1:

  • Minimum 2 years of directly related experience in a shipyard environment.
  • Must be able to work on assigned equipment under close supervision.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

Machinery Overhaul, Installation & Testing:

  • Perform maintenance, repair, and testing of the following systems and components:
  • Winches (electric-driven and electro-hydraulic)
  • Anchor windlasses
  • Steering gear systems
  • Air compressors
  • Pumps and motor alignments
  • Valves and diesel engines
  • Hydraulic troubleshooting and repairs
  • Reduction gears and generators
  • Boat davits and bearing installations
  • Gas turbines, louvers, aircraft elevators, underwater hull strainer plates
  • Cranes, brakes, resilient mounts, emitter belts, OD box installations
  • Sliding pad eyes and RAST tracks

Propulsion System Experience:

  • Perform repairs and alignments of propulsion systems, including:
  • Shafting (fixed and controllable pitch)
  • Propeller removal and installation
  • Rudder repair and installation

Tool Proficiency Requirements:

Candidates must have hands-on experience and proficiency in using a variety of tools and equipment, including but not limited to:

  • Grinders (fixed and portable)
  • Drill presses (fixed and portable)
  • Hydraulic presses, jacks, and porta powers
  • Torches, torque wrenches, and assorted hand tools (wrenches, pliers, hammers, screwdrivers, etc.)
  • Measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, and tape measures
  • Pipe wrenches, punch sets, and chisels
  • Other specialized tools as required by job assignments

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Must be DBIDS eligible to access naval facilities.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and shipboard repair experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong adherence to safety procedures and quality standards.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
