Job Overview

A nuclear medicine tech assistant supports a nuclear medicine technologist by preparing patients for radioactive drug administration and imaging scans. Duties include preparing and positioning patients, handling radioactive materials under supervision, operating imaging equipment, and maintaining records. The role requires a healthcare background and knowledge of radiation safety protocols.

What you'll do

  • Patient care: Prepare patients for procedures and assist with their positioning during scans.
  • Radioactive material handling: Safely prepare and administer radioactive drugs to patients under the supervision of a technologist or physician.
  • Equipment operation: Operate and help maintain nuclear medicine instruments and imaging equipment, such as PET/CT scanners.
  • Safety and documentation: Ensure patient and staff safety by following strict radiation protection protocols and maintaining accurate documentation and logs.
  • General support: Assist the nuclear medicine technologist and physician with various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Basic qualifications

  • Education: A healthcare or medical technology background, often with an associate degree or a certificate from an accredited program.
  • Skills: Strong attention to detail, knowledge of radiopharmaceuticals, patient care skills, and familiarity with safety protocols related to radiation.
  • Certification: While assistants may not need the same certifications as technologists, they must adhere to all safety regulations. Technologists must be certified, which can open pathways for career advancement.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience: Prefer candidates with prior experience in a medical office or healthcare setting, particularly in nuclear medicine or radiology.
