MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR (CLASS D)/LABORER

WMEA GRADE 10

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is semi-skilled work responsible for operating trucks and equipment. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of trucks, and other equipment and for performing assigned manual and semi-skilled tasks in connection with these duties. Work can include routine manual laboring tasks requiring considerable strength and endurance.

SUPERVISION:

Under general supervision. The employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction. The supervisor provides additional, specific instruction for new, difficult or unusual assignments. The employee refers unusual situations to the supervisor for advice and further instructions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

• Safely operates cars, light trucks, vans and SUVs weighing 26,000 pounds or less.
• Loads and unloads trucks and other vehicles by hand or with material handling equipment.
• In addition to the above, must perform all laboring duties of the host department in its daily activities.
• Services equipment with fuel, oil or coolants, makes minor adjustments and repairs.
• Participates in snow removal and sanding operations.
• Responds to severe weather events and other call-ins for service during emergencies.
• May be assigned any other duties as related to assist department function.

OTHER ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Considerable knowledge of hazardous and safety precautions in operating equipment in this class.
• Ability to adhere to traffic laws and safety regulations to avoid accidents or incidents.
• Ability to make minor repair and adjustments to equipment operated.
• Ability to operate two-way radio communications equipment.
• Working knowledge of the geography of the City of Westfield.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, frequently of a technical nature.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduation plus sufficient work experience or technical training to perform assigned duties; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Class D drivers' license required.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Thorough knowledge of departmental operations, ability to apply knowledge and experience to any departmental function; skill in operating specialized construction and maintenance of motor equipment.
• The work involves numerous standardized practices, procedures, or general instructions that govern the work and in some cases may require additional interpretation. Judgment is needed to locate, select and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation or guideline.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; strong communication skills in relaying important information and ability to deal appropriately with other employees, department heads and City officials. Ability to maintain confidential information.
• Ability to understand and follow directions and take the initiative in completing assignments. Ability to complete work under pressure while maintaining a high degree of accuracy in accordance with work deadlines.
• Ability to follow departmental rules, regulations, policies & practices in all aspects of job.
• Ability to establish and maintain effectively working relationships and work cooperatively with coworkers, City officials, other City employees and the public. Ability to communicate effectively with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
• Must be available to perform the essential functions whenever scheduled to work.

PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS

Physical Skills

Ability to travel throughout the City is necessary. Work is largely physical in nature including standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, squatting and may be repetitive in nature. Lifting of up to 75 pounds (may be heavier with assistance) and may be bulky with some pulling and pushing or reaching. May carry 30-50 pounds. May require climbing including on/off vehicles.

Visual Skills

Visual demands require routinely reading documents and operate motor vehicles and other equipment.
